Nigerians and other foreign students are not allowed to enrol in postsecondary schools in British Columbia, Canada, for a period of two years.
Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced the decision, stating that it intends to cut the number of new student visas issued by 35% for the current year.
The government plans to deal with what Miller called “exploitative practices” that take place in the educational system.

Premier David Eby recognised the critical role that the international education system plays in the social and economic fabric of the province and underlined the importance of addressing challenges within it.
Regardless of size, Eby voiced concern about the disparities in quality standards among the province’s private institutions.
Eby stated, “There are a wide array of private institutions, big and small, in our province, but regardless of the institution’s size, our expectations of the level of quality are the same.
“There are institutions that are not meeting our expectations right now,” he added.
Nearly 18,000 study visas were awarded to Nigerians in Canada in the first half of 2023, more than any other country with the exception of India, according to sources.
