Bloggers and social media influencers have received a call to action from the Nigerian Army to actively support national security initiatives.

The General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Bamidele Alabi, stressed this at the 31st Social Media Influencers’ Seminar in Ilorin.

Given the unstable and changing climate, the seminar, with the title “Emerging Trends on Social Media: Impacts on National Security,” was judged appropriate.

Alabi emphasised the significance of leveraging social media channels to foster harmonious cohabitation within Nigeria.

Social interaction between peers, businesses, governments, and other entities has been redesigned by social media platforms.

As observed in Nigeria’s northern and southeast, social media platforms contribute to the escalation of social and national instability.

“Some groups use online media to propagate their agenda and the general public also uses social media platforms to escalate this propaganda, which sometimes is fake news,” he added.

The Nigerian Army’s Chief of Military Affairs, Maj.-Gen. NC Ugbo, stressed that the seminar is part of a continuous programme that is being hosted in several cities across the country. Its goal is to increase communication between the Nigerian Army and bloggers, journalists, social media influencers, and the general public. The purpose of these exchanges is to investigate the best ways to use social media to support national security initiatives.
