The Imo-North senatorial district’s elected representative, Senator Patrick Ndubueze (Okigwe zone), has been the target of an assassination attempt, according to the Imo State Police Command.

The event happened at Senator Ndubueze’s Umualumoke home in the early hours of Monday, February 12.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, Henry Okoye, the command spokesperson, acknowledged the occurrence.

A trustworthy source claims that one of Senator Ndubueze’s aides tragically died as a result of the attackers’ onslaught.

The senator survived the attack unscathed, but one of the police officers sent to him was tragically shot.

The source stated, “The news of Senator Patrick Ndubueze’s being attacked is true. They stormed his residence at Umualumoke and killed a policeman working for him.

“They invaded his house and one of his policemen was gunned down in the process. It could be the same set of hoodlums that also ambushed the Correctional Service in Okigwe and set prisoners free after killing a police inspector and abducting the officer in charge of the centre.

“Okigwe has become a war zone where no one is saved. We are living in total fear. Most of our youths have run away for fear of being killed. Our security agencies are not doing enough to combat crimes in the state. Yet, there are so many of them (security men) in this area,” the source disclosed.

According to the source, there have been several criminal actions in Okigwe, including an attack on the Correctional Service earlier this year in which inmates were released after killing a police inspector and kidnapping the commanding officer. The source voiced worry about the rising levels of violence in Okigwe, calling the area a “war zone” with a general air of terror among the locals.

“We are living in total fear. Most of our youths have run away for fear of being killed. Our security agencies are not doing enough to combat crimes in the state. Yet, there are so many of them (security men) in this area,” the source lamented.
