Chief Bola Tinubu has been reminded by leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) that the 14-day nationwide strike notice is still non-negotiable.

At a meeting on Monday between labour leaders and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, which was presided over by Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour, the labour leaders stressed that the planned strike could only be avoided by government action that addressed the 15-point agreement reached on October 2, 2023.

The labour leaders refused to back down in the face of the minister’s entreaties to delay the strike, noting continuous efforts by the federal government to accomodate labour demands.

“We categorically told the minister and her team that our ultimatum stands. We were emphatic that only the government can stop the strike by honouring the agreement we reached on October 2, 2023.

“We cannot say the meeting was a deadlock because it has opened avenue for discussion. If the government had been opened to discussions, probably, we would not have issued the strike notice. As it is, we are not going back on the ultimatum, not with the mass suffering and poverty across the country. Well, the responsibility lies with government,” he said.

The NLC and TUC leaders gave the federal government a notice of a 14-day strike, starting on February 9, on February 8.

They voiced annoyance that the government seemed indifferent to the widespread misery and hardship throughout the country, in spite of organised labor’s efforts to preserve industrial peace.
