UPDATE: Sanwo-Olu Orders Closure of Lagos Island Market

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed that Mandilas Market be closed for the next two days in order to give traders time to comply with his direction to remove any illegal makeshift constructions that have been placed on road setbacks within or near the market.

During a joint inspection and enforcement exercise, the notice of closure was issued by Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development; Bola Olumegbon-Lawal, his colleague in charge of the Central Business District; Nurudeen Sodehinde, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development; and Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA.

Addressing reporters According to Babatunde, the original ultimatum was extended in order to further allow the impacted store owners to salvage their belongings and voluntarily remove obstructions erected on walkways.

The SA, Central Business District, Olumegbon-Lawal, on the other hand, begged the impacted shop owners to comply by law and remove any unlawful extensions and attachments. She also stated that the state government wants to see a clean, orderly city free from any type of environmental annoyance.
