The demand for Governor Godwin Obaseki to step in and stop the impeachment proceedings of Edo State’s Deputy Governor Philip Shuaibu has gathered momentum, thanks to the efforts of Catholic priest Andrew Obinyan.

The Edo State House of Assembly started the impeachment process on March 6 and charges Shuaibu with lying and disclosing government secrets.

Obinyan, the parish priest of St. Francis Catholic Church in Benin City, Edo State, pleaded with Governor Obaseki in a recent statement to permit Shuaibu to resolve his concerns without going through with impeachment.

Obinyan asked the governor to carefully evaluate the influence such actions could have on loyalty and future aspirations, expressing concern over the potential historical ramifications of impeaching a deputy governor under the Obaseki government.

He underlined the need of a peaceful conclusion over punitive measures, emphasising the need to handle the problem with respect and knowledge.

“May it not be in the annals of Edo political history that there was once a deputy governor, impeached under your watch for his aspiration.”

“It will be perceived as a sting of betrayal, and it will invariably redefine loyalty and aspiration as antithetical.”

He urged the governor to provide Deputy Governor Shaibu the same support in his hour of need, reminding him of the assistance he himself experienced throughout his own political tribulations.

“I am not insinuating he must be governor. Yet, we cannot justify an impeachment without putting a wedge on the path of positive advancement in other spheres of life.

“Do yourselves a favour because you don’t know the next victim in sudden political twists and turns.

“Dear Mr. Governor, here is the point. Bear with Comrade Philip Shaibu, not for his sake but for the sake of your own indomitable spirit.”
