The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have commenced a three-day national mourning period to honor the 17 soldiers killed by irate youths in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State. Among the fallen heroes are distinguished officers including the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion Oleh, Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi Hassan Ali, the Joint Task Force (JTF) Commander in Bomadi, Major Gembu Shafa, as well as another Major and a Captain.

The directive to initiate this period of mourning was issued by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa. Flags across all military locations nationwide will be flown at half-mast from Monday, March 18, 2024, until March 20, 2024, as a symbol of respect and sorrow for the courageous personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
