Labour Party Convention: Juluis Abure, Clement Ojukwu, Others Reelected Amidst Crisis

The Labour Party (LP) Delegates overwhelmingly affirmed Julius Abure and other principal officers reelection to a second term during the party’s National Convention In Nnewi, Anambra State.

Abure was reelected for second term as the National Chairman the Labour Party, despite the Nigeria Labour Congress’s (NLC) resistance.

Ikechukwu Emetu, the National Convention Chairman and Deputy Governor of Abia State, announced Abure as the winner of the party’s national convention on Wednesday, which took place in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Meanwhile, Five individuals who were labelled as thugs, were detained at the scene and taken to the police headquarters to be questioned.

It was said that the thugs were passing out divisive pamphlets that were critical of the party’s leadership.

They were charged with attempting to stir up trouble during the ongoing convention.

According to a party source, the criminal elements’ and their backers’ goal was to undermine the convention.

Recall news published by Anaedoonline reporting there was conflict between Abure and the NLC leadership, led by Joe Ajaero, prior to this reelection.

Julius Abure’s Leadership Upheld by Abuja Court

The NLC had earlier demanded that Abure step down as party chairman and that a caretaker transition committee be established at once in order to plan the party’s legal and inclusive national convention.

On March 20, employees who were barred from entering the party headquarters congregated outside, singing anti-party songs and calling for the resignation of the Labour Party Chairman, whom they charged with financial misconduct.

Other returned and newly elected party officials include, Mr. Clement Ojukwu, as the re-elected National Organising Secretary, Comrade Kennedy Ahanotu as the substantive National Youth Leader, Mrs Dayo Ekong as the New Financial Secretary of the party.
