Following his arraignment on charges of alleged abuse of office, Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was placed under remand in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Monday.

After Emefiele and his co-defendant, Herry Omoile, entered not guilty pleas to a 26-count allegation of abuse of office brought against them by the EFCC, Justice Rahman Oshodi issued the remand order.

Until the judge made a ruling about Emefiele’s bail application, he might have to stay in jail until Thursday. Omoile was placed under detention in the Nigerian Correctional Services’ custody in the interim.

Abdulakeem Ladi-Lawal, Emefiele’s attorney, had asked for bail prior to the court’s decision, recommending self-recognition or the most lenient conditions feasible. He also requested that Emefiele be released to his attorneys while the terms of his bail were being finalised, mirroring the conditions that Justice Hamzat Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja had earlier given him.

Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the attorney for the EFCC, did not object to the bail request, but he requested the judge to impose conditions that would guarantee the defendants’ appearance at trial.

Emefiele and his co-defendant are accused of breaking the Corrupt Practices Act of 2000 by accepting gratification, obtaining gifts through middlemen, engaging in corruption, forging fake property receipts, and giving corrupt benefits to accomplices. The allegations were brought by Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the prosecutor for the EFCC, on April 3.

According to Newsmen, Emefiele is also being prosecuted separately by the EFCC at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on charges that he engaged in fraudulent financial transactions while serving as the governor of CBN.
