R&B artist R. Kelly was given a 30-year jail term on Wednesday. This comes after his federal racketeering and sex trafficking conviction from last year.
Kelly is accused of trapping the victims of his sexual assault by exploiting their popularity.
The 55-year-defense old’s counsel requested a sentence of 10 years or less, arguing that the prosecution’s proposal was “tantamount to a life sentence.” Prosecutors had urged the judge to sentence the man to more than 25 years in prison.
UPDATE: R. Kelly Could Be Sentenced To More Than 25 Years In Prison
In September of last year, a jury found Kelly guilty on nine charges, including one for racketeering and eight for contravening the Mann Act, which prohibits sex trafficking.
Prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York accused Kelly of using his status as a celebrity and a “network of people at his disposal to target girls, boys and young women for his own sexual gratification.”
