The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) commenced a two-day mass protest in Lagos State on Today, decrying the dire state of the nation’s economy. Members of the labour union, in significant numbers, gathered in Computer Village, Ikeja, and surrounding streets, urging the Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to address the prevailing hardships faced by citizens.

The protest also serves as a demonstration against the government’s alleged failure to honor agreements made on October 2, 2023, particularly regarding the removal of the fuel subsidy. Despite a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to implement measures to alleviate the widespread suffering, no tangible action has been taken.

Monday night’s meeting between government officials and NLC leadership ended without resolution, further fueling the resolve for the nationwide protest. In a press statement issued by Comrade Ismail Bello, the General Secretary of the union, affiliates were urged to mobilize their members for the protest scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bello’s statement emphasized the importance of unity among Nigerian workers and citizens in peacefully engaging the government to address the prevailing hardship. Disregarding a letter from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, which was viewed as an attempt to undermine the solidarity of workers, the NLC remains steadfast in its commitment to seeking redress for the nation’s challenges.

Amidst calls for mobilization and solidarity, the NLC reiterates its determination to ensure a successful protest, urging all stakeholders to remain focused on the objective of effecting positive change in the country. As Nigerians unite in their demand for economic relief, the NLC stands at the forefront, advocating for a better future for all citizens.
