At the Oye market in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday, a guy whose identity has not yet been determined was washed away by flood.

As of the time the report was submitted on Wednesday, the victim’s body had not yet been located. A chance observer had described the victim as a stout man.

The man accidentally stepped into a drainage at the front of the market during a rainfall, according to a source who talked to our correspondent under the condition of anonymity, and was then swept away by the water.

The source said,”The Man was swept away by flood at Nimo Market; the body is yet to be seen.

“It happened when it was raining in the area. The man unknowingly stepped inside the drainage at the market and the flood carried him way.

“So far, no news about the man. Nobody had given the identity of the man. Those who where around when the incident happened said they didn’t know the man; and no news about where he is.

This occurred just four days after two toddlers died as a result of flooding brought on by severe rain at Nkwele Awka, in the Awka South Local Government of Anambra State.

The deceased reportedly ranged in age from four to seven.

One of the kids was carried away by the flood while throwing trash into a flood channel, and the other was carried away while attempting to save his slippers from the flood.

Remember that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had warned the country about impending flood disaster in 19 states, including Anambra State, warning that sufficient preparations should be made in good time to prevent the level of devastation that occurred during the last year’s flood disaster across the nation.

Additionally, it recommended coastal communities to start their evacuation efforts well in advance of the expected flood.

In Anambra State, over 50 towns were destroyed by flooding last year, which also resulted in an outbreak of cholera.

UPDATE: Flood Sweeps Away Two Children In Anambra

Two kids died in Anambra State due to a recent heavy flood in Nkwele Awka, Awka South Local Government Area yesterday.

The two kids, who ranged in age from four to seven, perished at two different sites in the region, according to information obtained by Anaedoonline.ng.

The first child was taken away by the powerful flood while dumping trash along the riverbank, and the second was carried away while attempting to retrieve his slippers that had been carried away by the flood.

Soludo Wants A National Solution To Flooding

Ify, a local, claimed that the girl’s mother had sent her to dispose of rubbish when the river caught up to her.

Ify said, “She was pouring the waste inside the drainage when her leg suddenly slipped and she fell inside the drainage and was carried away by the heavy flood.”

Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesman for the state police, responded to the news by claiming that the incident had not been reported to the command.

To improve safety in the state, he pledged that the command would continue working with the government and classified the situation as a pure environmental disaster.

He said, “This is pure environmental disaster but we keep working with the government to make sure safety is improved.”

Anambra Flood: 14,000 Refugees Mourn As Death Toll Rises To 17

17 people have now died as a result of the flood that yesterday devastated Anambra State’s coastal regions, and 14,000 people have fled the eight local councils that were affected.
About 10 of the 40 people who were thought to have boarded the unfortunate canoe that capsized after hitting the disembarkation of a bridge in Ogbaru Local Council were reported dead, while 30 people were saved.

Additionally, a man who had successfully rescued his family from the flood and had chosen to remain behind to look after the neighbourhood drowned in Ogbaru while he slept.

Yesterday, a family of six, including the mother, four kids and a sister were drowned at Nzam community in Anambra West Local Council, when their residence was submerged.

The Guardian gathered that the entire Anambra West Local Council is submerged, forcing displaced indigenes to relocate to Premier Primary School, Aguleri; Unity Primary School and St. Augustine, Umuoba Anam, respectively in Anambra East Council.
Some displaced persons have also created additional holding centres for people who are in dire need of accommodation to settle at the vicinity of the bridge.
A trending video which captured the sad incident and monitored by The Guardian showed that members of the family were preparing to leave their home for a safer upland when they were submerged.

The video also showed a scene of youths of the community bringing out corpses of victims from a house and depositing them in an upland area.
It was learnt that members of the family were already prepared to leave for a safe place, before their residence was submerged by flood.

By the latest accident, the total number of flood-related deaths rose to 17. Contacted, Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Chief Paul Odenigbo, said information available to the Committee on flood in the state, headed by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyeka Ibezim, confirmed that 30 persons were rescued alive, while 10 bodies were recovered.

Odenigbo said the state government would open other camps as the need arises, stressing that some holding camps came up when floods affected the originally-planned settlement.

He noted that the state government has been pro-active and forthcoming in terms of provision of food, water, toiletries and security, among others, to make the victims feel more comfortable and at home.

Odenigbo hinted that the Federal Government through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has concluded arrangements to assist the state and refugees, adding that NEMA and the military had commenced aerial surveillance, using helicopters, to rescue trapped residents of the flooded areas.
