Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, has drawn criticism for allegedly resigning from his position to go to a lavish birthday celebration in Grenada.
The event, which honoured businesswoman Aisha Achimugu of Abuja on her 50th birthday, was held at the upscale and pricy Calivigny Island.
According to sources, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who departed from Nigeria on January 17, took part in the celebrations on January 18 and stayed in Grenada till January 23.

At a celebration at Calivigny Island, an 80-acre private and magnificent setting that costs over $132,000 per night, the governor celebrated while the people of Lagos endured economic woes and insecurity following the fire of the Mandilas building on January 21.
The celebrant, Aisha Achimugu, apparently went all out to hire the Calivigny Island for a week, complete with activities at the Silversand Grenada resort.
Exotic outfits, fine jewellery, and performances by both local and foreign performers—such as Kenny G, Waje, Flavour, and Adekunle Gold—were all part of the festivities.
Mrs. Achimugu, a widow who lost her husband to a coronavirus in 2020, is reported to have changed into at least thirty different outfits throughout the week-long celebration. It is estimated that each dress cost thousands of dollars.

For most of the time, she was adorned in very expensive diamond jewelry, donned luxury shoes and carried Hermes crocodile-leather handbags, each believed to cost between $50,000 and $80,000. A number of parties were held on board the Silver Angel, a vessel cruising on the Caribbean sea under the flag of the United Kingdom.
Furthermore, David Reeves, the event’s official disc jockey, was spotted eagerly shouting, “who wan help you no go stress you,” as he displayed bundles of crisp US dollars at the conclusion of the celebration, estimated to be worth up to $50,000. As the musicians played, some of them got doused with cash.
“Exotic wines, expensive but delicious food, crisp dollars, and obscene opulence were on display,” an attendee told PREMIUM TIMES. According to the source, the event’s organisers had to spend billions of naira planning it.
“We basically shut down Grenada and the citizens of that country knew that Nigerians were in town, they knew the eagles had landed,” the source anonymously stated.

“But what even surprised me the most was seeing Governor Sanwo-Olu at the event. Is he not sensitive to the mood of the Nigerian nation? What was he doing there as a public figure?”
But there are still unanswered questions about Governor Sanwo-Olu’s absence from his position of leadership during a critical time. Furthermore, it is yet unknown how the governor’s visit and stay in Grenada would be paid for. Calls and texts attempting to reach the governor for comment went unanswered.
At the time of this report, Gbenga Omotosho, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, could not be reached for comment.
