Police Inspector Ubi Ebri was given a death sentence for murder by a Delta State High Court in Asaba.
The state capital’s Inspector Ebri was charged with murdering Mr. Ibeh Onyeka, a telephone repairer and vendor, on April 5, 2023, while conducting a stop-and-search operation along Ugbolu Asaba Road.
Young people in the city staged large-scale protests in response to the event.
E.H. Edoema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice, led the prosecution’s allegations that Ebri was a member of the police patrol squad carrying out the stop-and-search operation.
Delta State High Court Sentences Police Inspector to Death for Murder
Reports state that the police squad stopped Mr. Onyeka and his wife while they were travelling from Ugbolu to Asaba.
Mr. Onyeka was fatally shot in the head by Inspector Ebri when he allegedly opened fire on their car, while his wife, who was seated in the front with him, remained unharmed.
Judge C.D. Diai, who was presiding over the case, found Inspector Ubi Ebri guilty and executed him.
