A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in command of the “B” Division in Calabar has been the subject of a comprehensive inquiry by Gyogon Augustine Grimah, the Commissioner of Police in Cross River State.

This comes after a video went viral in which a man’s voice can be heard yelling, accusing her of sabotaging critical election materials on November 2, 2024, the day of Cross River State’s local council elections.

The policewoman’s name was not revealed by the commissioner.

 

“The investigation will help address the allegations,” he said.

He urged anyone with concrete proof of the accusations to come forward and assist with the inquiry.

In a statement signed on his behalf by SP Irene Ugbo, the Public Relations Officer of the command, Grimah said, “The Cross River State Police Command is aware of a video circulating online, showing the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘B’ Division, Calabar, alleged to have supported a particular political party at a hotel within her area of responsibility during the Local Government Elections on November 2, 2024.

“The Command clarifies that the DPO was acting on credible intelligence regarding electoral materials allegedly diverted from the designated polling center at the Women Development Center, Calabar, to a hotel.

“In response, the DPO led officers to recover and secure these materials, ensuring their safe transport to the appropriate voting location.”

Gunmen Kill Rivers DPO

Government’s Response: A Bounty and Emergency Meeting

Rivers State Governor, Siminalaye Fubara, reacted swiftly to the gruesome murder of Superintendent Angbashim. Expressing his deep concern over the incident, he announced a substantial N100 million bounty on the prime suspect, Gift Okpara Okpolowu, widely known as “2baba.” .

In response to the escalating violence, Governor Fubara convened an emergency security council meeting at Government House in Port Harcourt. The meeting, attended by high-ranking officials from various security agencies, aimed to assess the situation and devise a plan to restore peace and order to the troubled area. The Governor emphasized that Rivers State would not tolerate criminal activities within its borders.

Law Enforcement’s Determined Pursuit

Commissioner of Police for Rivers State, Nwonyi Emeka, led a determined effort to bring the killers to justice. Along with his management team and tactical units, Emeka initiated an operation in the Odumude community, the epicenter of the violence. During this operation, six suspects were apprehended, and significant items, including a locally crafted pistol and various charms, were seized.

As a result of these developments, the Odumude community had to be evacuated, with residents fleeing for safety. Emeka also assigned a new DPO, Superintendent Zuokumor Richard, to the division. Richard’s mission was to conduct a thorough search of the area, locate the culprits responsible for the DPO’s death, recover his body, and retrieve any operational weapons used in the gruesome act.

Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase, expressed his condolences to Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Nwonyi Emeka, and the bereaved family of Superintendent Angbashim. He acknowledged the tragic loss of a courageous officer who had valiantly fought to protect the Odumude community.

Gunmen Attack Rivers Community, Kill Six

Dr. Arase also emphasized that the murder of Superintendent Angbashim would not deter the indomitable spirit of police officers across the nation in their ongoing battle against criminal elements. He pledged unwavering support from the Police Service Commission to ensure that the perpetrators were captured and brought to justice.

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pankshin Division in Plateau State’s Pankshin Local Government Area has been kidnapped by gunmen, ANAEDOONLINE.NG learned on Thursday.

A police officer in the council area confirmed the news to ANAEDOONLINE.NG in Jos on Thursday night.

According to him, the gunmen took the DPO, whose name has not been revealed, after shooting him in his hotel room in the council area.

Suleman: Edo CP Dismisses DPO Following Death Of Suspect

Following the passing of the suspect allegedly involved in the attack on the convoy of Apostle Johnson Suleman, General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministry, the state commissioner of police, AIG Abutu Yaro, has removed CSP Ayodele Suleiman as the Divisional Police Officer of Auchi Division, Edo State.

The DPO’s withdrawal was one of the steps taken to determine what exactly happened to one of the remaining members of the gang that attacked the convoy, according to a statement by the Command’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Jennifer Iwegbu, who also instructed him to report to the state police command for debriefing.

The statement read, “The outgoing CP now AIG Abutu Yaro has ordered the withdrawal of CSP Ayodele Suleiman, DPO Auchi for debriefing at the State Headquarters with immediate effect.

“We urged members of the public to remain calm and patient, assuring that no stone would be left unturned to unearth the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

ANAEDOONLINE.NG had earlier reported that one of the suspected attackers of the Apostle Suleiman was arrested by vigilantes present in the community and handed over to the police.

Reacting to the alleged death of the suspect, Apostle Suleman took to his Twitter account accusing the police of trying to erase all evidence that could lead to the arrest of his attackers.

Unknown gunmen have killed a Chief Superintendent of Police, identified as (CSP) Fatmann Dooiyor.

The murdered police officer who was the DPO for Omuma, Governor Hope Uzodimma’s community in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, was among those who tried to repel the attack.

According to reports, the gunmen invaded the facility on the day IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was to be arraigned at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The spokesman of the Imo State police command, CSP Mike Abattam, noted that six of the gunmen were killed by the police while 11 were arrested.

Abattam while speaking on the incident said the gunmen in a convoy of three vehicles invaded the community but were repelled by police led by the Area Commander, ACP Benjamin Abang.

He said that the police were alerted when bandits were sighted moving in convoy into Omuma town.

Abattam said, “The tactical teams of the command immediately swung into action, ambushed, and launched a surprising attack on the convoy of the bandits which resulted in the neutralization of six of the bandits while 11 of them were arrested to the station.

“Unfortunately, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Fatmann Dooiyor paid the supreme price.

“The teams later recovered the three vehicles abandoned by the bandits to the station which includes, two Toyota Highlander SUV vehicles with registration numbers Abia MBL 517 AT and LAGOS, JJJ 984 EL respectively and a milk colour unregistered Lexus Jeep to the station.

The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested five suspects over alleged unlawful possession of firearms.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige, in a statement issued on Sunday in Kaduna, said the suspects were arrested with loaded AK-47, Makarov pistol and other firearms.

Jalige said that their arrests followed an information received by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Kubacha.

The suspects were engaged in unwholesome activities in Kenyi village in Kagarko Local Government Area of the state threatening the peaceful coexistence of the residents over disputed piece of land.

He disclosed that the situation had deteriorated to a boiling point, resulting in one of the parties threatening to kill their opponents with dangerous weapons.

“Items recovered from them included an AK-47 rifle, loaded with 29 rounds of live 7.62 x 39mmammunition and a 9 x 18mm. Makarov pistol, loaded with seven rounds of 9mm live ammunitions,” he said.

Jalige added that the swift response of the force restored normalcy in the community.”

He said that investigation so far has unraveled the circumstances behind the fracas and the source of the illegal firearms.

Tension As Man Abducts Soldier, Seizes His Uniform, ID, ATM Cards

A man, who the police identified as a suspected kidnapper, has been accused of abducting a military officer on Saturday in Ogun State.

Police said the suspect and his colleagues, who were at large, reportedly kidnapped a W/O 2 military officer at about 11:30 pm on Friday and took him to their hideout in Alagbado, Lagos State, where they stripped him of his uniform, his identity card and his three Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards and his phone.

Anaedoonline.ng reports that the suspect was arrested at Odo Pako Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government area of Ogun State.

The suspect, Waliu Oloyede, was nabbed after a distress call received by the DPO of Sango Ota Divisional Headquarters, CSP Godwin Idehai, that local vigilantes were having issues with an army officer in the area.

Upon the report, the DPO was said to have led his team to the scene where the suspect, who dressed in full military camouflage uniform with the rank of W02 was seen.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect, who paraded himself in military uniform “could not give satisfactory account of himself and was apprehended and brought to the station.”

Oyeyemi stated that the suspect, who was said to have attempted to snatch a dane gun from a vigilante man, was unable to give account of how he got the military uniform, or address of the unit where he is serving, hence he was detained for impersonation.

“While in detention, police got information that the suspect and others at large abducted a W/o2 military officer at about 11:30 pm of 16th July 2021and took him to their hideout in Alagbado, Lagos State, where he was stripped of his uniform, they collected his identity card, his three ATM cards and phone before the victim escaped from them,” Oyeyemi told newsmen on Monday.

The PPRO said “It was the victim’s uniform the suspect put on to commit another crime before he was arrested,” adding that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the anti-kidnapping unit of the state CIID for further investigation.

DPO Shot As Gunmen Kidnap 5 Police Officers, 3 Vigilantes

Unknown gunmen suspected to be villagers have kidnapped at least five police officers and three vigilantes in Aba Tuntun, a suburb of Ijebu-Igbo in Ogun State.

A source confirmed that the Baale of Aba Tuntun community had earlier petitioned the police, informing them that some people within his community were in possession of firearms, which they reportedly use for illegal activities in the area.

It was gathered that the police, after receiving the petition, swung into action by conducting a raid with 15 officers and 35 local vigilantes on Thursday.

The raid, sources said, was successful as six single-barreled guns, 16 Dane guns and 15 cartridges were recovered from the hoodlums, who were arrested by the police.

However, pandemonium struck when the villagers allegedly waylaid the police officers as they were about to leave the Ogun community.

“The villagers fired gunshots at the police and attacked them with other dangerous weapons. The DPO that led the team and some others sustained gunshot injuries.

“Five officers and three vigilantes were kidnapped by the villagers. They made away with police, two AK-47 rifles, one pump action, one teargas, money and others,” a source said.

Meanwhile, our correspondent gathered that four of the five abducted officers and three civilians have been rescued.

But, one Constable, Emmanuel Gene is still being held captive by the people, it was learned.

Also, the hoodlums who were earlier arrested by the police were set free, while two vehicles belonging to the police were damaged by the villagers.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, has confirmed the incident to newsmen.

Oyeyemi said the police had reinforced to the area in order to rescue the missing police constable.

He said three suspects have been arrested and they are helping the police in their investigation.

Angry protesters on Wednesday killed the Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Augustine Ogbeche, and set ablaze a police station in the Atan-Ota Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State .

The protesters also inflicted injuries on the Divisional Police Officer, SP Sikiru Olugbenga, whose whereabouts were unknown.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

Oyeyemi said one civilian also lost his life to the violence while another police station at Obada-Oko in the Ewekoro Local Government Area, which had been serving as a zonal intervention office for the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad was attacked.

Oyeyemi said, “The hitherto peaceful protest embarked upon by youths across Ogun State is unfortunately taking a dangerous violent dimension as some people with ulterior motives are now using the opportunity to commit all sorts of heinous crimes.

“Early this (Wednesday) morning, the protesters went to Atan-Ota and set the police station there ablaze and subsequently murdered the DCO, DSP Augustine Ogbeche, in cold blood.

“A civilian also died in the process while some arms were carted away. They also inflicted serious injury on the DPO, SP Sikiru Olugbenga, whose whereabouts is yet unknown.

“Also in Abeokuta, some groups of boys attacked Obada-oko divisional headquarters and vandalized it.”

The PPRO however said in view of the attacks on the police and their stations, the Commissioner of Police Ogun State Command, Edward Ajogun, had appealed to the youths to eschew violence and embrace peace.

The police boss, according to the PPRO, said, “The youths are reminded that since the commencement of the protests the police have been nice and civil to them even when some of our men were injured and our stations damaged.

“We even went ahead and released all the 36 suspects we arrested. However, if in the course of handling the protests anybody feels offended, we plead understanding and not retaliatory measures, including killing and maiming policemen and burning and damaging police stations.

“We will ensure that justice is served any aggrieved person. Please and please let us continue to embrace peace rather than violence.”
