Nasarawa Residents Storm Streets As Tribunal Sacks State Governor (Photos)

Residents of Nasarawa have flocked to the streets to celebrate the tribunal decision that overturned Abdullahi Sule’s election as State Governor on behalf of the All Progressives Congress.

According to earlier reports from Anaedoonline.ng, the Nasarawa State governorship election petition tribunal found David Ombugadu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, to be the person lawfully elected by the State after voiding Sule’s election victory.

Two justices ruled on Monday that Ombugadu won the election, with one judge dissenting.

Sule, an APC candidate, was declared the victor of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), receiving 347,209 votes.

Ombugadu received 283,016 votes, placing second.

The PDP candidate, however, had voiced displeasure with the governorship election’s results, claiming suspected anomalies.

A video that appeared on the internet showed some of the politician’s fans having a small party right now.

On the streets, people wearing all black, including men and women, were spotted celebrating with PDP-colored flags.

Following the decision, the PDP candidate is also spotted at his home beaming with glee.

After Spending $19bn On Refineries By Buhari, None Is Operational – Gov Sule

Abdullahi Sule, the governor of Nasarawa, criticized former president Muhammadu Buhari’s expenditure on the country’s refineries on Thursday.

Sule claimed that despite spending more over $19 billion on them, none of them are operational, adding that the money was utilized to construct the Dangote Refinery in Lagos.

Three refineries that the federal government owns—one each in Kaduna, Port Harcourt (Rivers), and Warri (Delta)—are not yet being used to their full potential.

Sule bemoaned that the enormous sums of money distributed did not have the desired outcome while speaking on Channels Television Sunrise Daily.

“In the eight years, he (Buhari) spent more money than the $19 billion that Dangote spent in building a refinery.

“That is one and a half times the size of our three refineries. From the government side, I think we didn’t do a good job,” he admitted.

The governor further noted that Dangote’s facility possesses a daily capacity of 650,000 barrels, compared to the refineries’ combined capacity of 450,000.

Sule claimed that rather than attempting to restore all three refineries, the previous administration should have concentrated on getting one to operate at full capacity.

Governor Sule To Battle Kwara Governor Over NGF Chairmanship Poisition

For the role of chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule will compete against Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq of Kwara State.

According to Newsmen, since the Forum was established in 2003, while President Olusegun Obasanjo was in office, the governors have had the option of choosing their chairman by consensus.

However, the election of the NGF chairman polarized and politicized the 36 state governors, breaking precedent just as President Goodluck Jonathan’s government was coming to an end.

However, as soon as President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration took office in 2015, all NGF chairman were chosen by consensus rather than by vote.

ThisDay reports that the NGF met last Wednesday and decided to elect a new governor to succeed Aminu Tambawul, the departing interim chairman and governor of the state of Sokoto.

Given his experience in the business sector, his performance as governor so far, and his reputation as a jolly good guy among his friends, it was heard that several governors had decided that Governor Sule would serve as the new chairman.

That scheme was, however, foiled at the last minute when Abdulrasaq also expressed interest in running for NGF Chair, a development that is believed to have surprised other governors.

Some governors, it was reported, claimed the Kwara governor wasn’t a familiar face at their meetings, such aspiration was divisive and uncalled for.

Additionally, it was reported that some governors had reservations about Abdulrasaq’s ability to lead the NGF because he is generally regarded as an introvert, especially given that this is not an issue involving the APC specifically but rather governors from all parties.

To avoid a repeat of what happened under the Jonathan administration, the election was reportedly halted to enable time for additional deliberations.

It was discovered that other national topics were instead covered at the meeting and that the valedictory session was ultimately moved to a different date.

The ranking governors from the APC are those of Borno, Gombe, Nasarawa, and Kwara States. Gombe and Borno state governors were disqualified because the Vice President-elect is from the North East, hence the next forum chairman will come from the North-Central.

2023 Elections: Governors Asked To Engage In Urgent Dialogue To Preserve Democracy

The NGF as a group had decided to forgo elections for the position of chairman in favor of unanimously selecting one candidate based on qualifications and relationships with specific colleagues.

One governor told THISDAY: “We don’t want to divide ourselves with balloting on who becomes the chairman of the forum. Some of us have been asked to speak with the two governors to enable us to arrive at a consensus on the choice of a chairman of Nigeria’s Governors Forum.

“We are not seeking input from any of the political parties, it is our affairs to smoothen governance. Though we are elected from different political parties, we don’t want to be divided on this or tagged politically biased”.

“We want a governor that will command the respect of all of us. At the end of the day, we will achieve a consensus on this.”

Another governor also told THISDAY that since the meeting was for governors it would be fair to allow the 13 governors-elect to be part of the decision of who will become their chairman.

In the NGF as presently constituted, 17 of the governors who have completed their constitutional eight years in office would be exiting the forum by May 29 this year.

Likewise in the PDP, the oldest governor in the party is Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, who is spending his seventh year as governor and will lead the PDP governors after May 29.

Apart from leading the PDP Governors Forum, Obaseki with his private sector background may as well become the vice chairman of the NGF.

Give Fulani Herdsmen Something That Works, Not Anti-Open Grazing – Gov Sule

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule has told some of his colleagues that the anti-open grazing policy adopted in some states is not realistic.

The Governor who observed that the policy is not working but some states are just following the band-wagon effect in signing the law, called on such states to adopt a workable solution.

Sule however acknowledged that it is archaic for the Fulani herdsmen to continue open grazing in these modern times, submitted that his administration is looking at embracing the National Livestock Transformation Plan.

He disclosed that other northern governors agree the nomadic lifestyle is old-fashioned but the anti-open grazing law adopted by the southern governors is not the solution.

“We don’t like the current anti-grazing policy, it is not working,” he said

“We are not just going with the crowd about Anti-Grazing law. If you sign anti-grazing law and it is not working, is it worth it?

“One thing all the northern governors have decided, we said that the current method of open grazing is old-fashioned, outdated, and cannot be sustained,” he added In an interview with Channels Television.

Anaedoonline.ng recalls the Southern Governors’ Forum has pledged to go ahead with signing the anti-grazing bill into law in their respective states.

Already, Enugu, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, and Lagos states have signed the bill into law after it was passed by their respective house of assembly.

While emphasizing an alternative, Governor Sule revealed that his administration in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Netherlands Government is working on setting up grazing reserves in seven locations in the state for the herdsmen.

2023 Presidency: This Is The Only Southern Candidate The North Will Support – Gov Sule

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State says governors serving under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will support the candidacy of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo if he indicated interest in vying for the 2023 presidential election.

Anaedoonline.ng reports that the Governor stated this on Monday when he met with members of the Progressives Consolidation Group (PCG) in Lafia, the state capital.

Although Osinbajo has not thrown his hat into the 2023 presidential ring, the group said it was in Nasarawa to solicit the governor’s support for the Vice President.

Gov. Abdullahi Sule: PDP Getting Weaker Under Buhari’s Govt

Sule asserted that APC governors will support Osinbajo, stressing that he is a “sellable” candidate.

“Our concern is how we will sustain the party beyond President Buhari. So, if you come up with the idea, you know you will not only get my attention but the attention of every progressive governor in the country.

“So, if you are going about to sell this man, I want you to know that not every product is sellable but Osinbajo is sellable.

“I pray that all the work you are doing now will not be in vain. It will be good for our party and the progress of this country,” Sule said.

In his remarks, chairman of the group, Aliyu Kurfi said, “We are here sir on a very serious business, the serious business of political succession. We are on our mission but engineered by the vision of one of our elder statesmen, Vice-President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo”.
