The opportunity cost of an Ubah vs Bianca contest
By Major Oseloka
Elementary economics left me with some sing-songs, amongst them are, inflation, the scale of preference, and the sweetest of them all to me – opportunity cost. Opportunity cost which simply means the loss of other alternatives when one alternative is chosen is what characterizes the polity of Nnewi at the moment.
The Anambra south senatorial contest which has been reduced to an online dogfight between the online minions of Dr Ifeanyi Ubah and the less sophisticated media neophytes of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, the two major aspirants of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has polluted the ideological space of the town, reducing what could have been an intellectual and strategic battle to a puerile contest between sycophants who have solemnly pledged to the loyalty of their daily bread.
Dr Ubah who carries around an uncommon burden of reputational damages, ranging from his alleged record of more successfully completed slaps than completed projects to the reports of betrayal of business associates, is a populist whose fan base remains a political fortress for willing negotiators. On the other hand, Mrs Ojukwu a political neophyte whose backbone is strengthened by the heroic acts of her late husband, General Dim Emeka Ojukwu, is buoyed by accusations of elitism and lack of connection with the people she seeks to represent.
A few days ago, accusations arose from Mrs Ojukwu filarial relationship with some of her supposed ‘billionaire sponsors’ – an accusation magically conjured by the electronic henchmen released into the media space unconsciously by their indebtedness to Dr Ubah’s philanthropy. Although the accusation has been denied by the management of a hotel through an unprofessionally written memo, supposedly denying it as the work of mischief makers.
Just more damaging also was the outcry by the immediate family of the Late Ojukwu, distancing themselves from her ambition. This outcry dumbfounds the reality of parliamentary politics: parliamentary politics exemplifies the locality of politics, hence, the charity must begin at home.
However, amidst the elitist leanings of Ambassador Ojukwu and the populist displays of Dr Ubah, is lost the opportunity of intellectual understanding of the responsibilities of a parliamentarian. The present dilemma of having a Senator Ubah or Ojukwu presents a terrible impasse where a subject that should have been debated is now a market square debate with character assassination taking the place of logical interrogation.
The opportunity cost of a having a senator who as an aspirant, fails to appear in public meetings that should connect her with her people, and that which embarks on projects only to obtain casualties as outcomes – casualties who are affected either by leaving them unpaid for services rendered or betrayed by the projects unexecuted – for a well scrutinized selection process is lost on a citizenry saturated with some persons who have refused to grow beyond patriarchal sentiments of the gender of a candidate.
The contest for the Anambra South Senatorial District is beyond the dirty fights between the unleashed e-rats of both parties. There must be a logical process of scrutiny, which a society made up of a huge population above the middle class – as Nnewi is known – should follow.
Dr Ubah’s antecedent of speaking out and intervening in critical sectors that have helped in saving the lives of his people is a key ingredient that makes him the man to beat irrespective of the party he is in. However, his penchant for picking up fights with opponents should also be a cause for concern, as the Senate is made up of lobbyists, whose interest cannot be bought over by mere belligerence. Ambassador Bianca on her own, whose unnecessary meekness and aloofness betray the energy.
Business mogul, Mr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, who was at the APGA party secretariat also yesterday to pick his Anambra South senatorial form, said he will not step down for Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu. Mrs Ojukwu is also seeking the same party ticket.
He told newsmen that he was sure he will secure the ticket and represent his senatorial district.
Asked how he would cope combining his businesses with lawmaking, especially as he has not held any elective office before, Ubah said he had capable managers and that his experience was more needed by his people in the Senate.
NFF Election Saga: Amaju Pinnick and Ifeanyi Ubah trying frustrating me – Chinedu Okoye
By Verbinski
As the NFF elections draw nearer, interested candidates have been doing the needful by picking, filling and submitting forms as directed by the regulations. However, trouble, saga and hints of corruption are never far away at every corner
As part of the election requirements, interested persons are meant to get the support of their State FA Chairmen but it appears that even that section of the rules is being abused by Amaju Pinnick.
In a letter to FIFA titled: “PETITION AGAINST THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ANAMBRA STATE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, DR. IFEANYI UBAH OVER HIS REFUSAL TO NOMINATE ME TO CONTEST FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIA FOOTBALL FEDERATION (NFF) AS STIPULATED IN ARTICLE 4.3 OF THE “GUIDELINES FOR THE NIGERIA FOOTBALL FEDERATION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ELECTIONS, 2018”
Mr Chinedu Okoye, a native of Ogidi in Anambra State, a former football referee in the Swiss Liga, President of Bimo FC and a Diploma holder in Physical and Health Education from the University of Nigeria, laid his frustration as the deliberate ploy by the Anambra State Football Association, Ifeanyi Ubah under instructions from Amaju Pinnick to disenfranchise him from contesting the position of the office of the Presidency of the NFF.
Ifeanyi Ubah told Mr Okoye that he will not support or nominate him to contest despite his eligibility unless he gets the explicit go-ahead from Pinnick
It is important to note that Pinnick is nursing ambitions of reelection despite overseeing the most horrible era in Nigeria Football which broke a whole lot of negative records but none comes close to the fact that this is the first time in the history of Nigeria Football that the League ended mid-season for no just cause, also the first time the league is having a champion by proxy not based on merit and now we are looking at the first time an Administrator is handpicking who his opponents will be in an election
It will be pertinent to recall that Ifeanyi Ubah was installed as the Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, in clear violation of every rule and tenet associated with the said office in 2016
Also, Ifeanyi Ubah’s club, FC Ifeanyi Ubah notorious for owing players salaries that run into months, have been accused of practising slavery by falsifying players contracts and forcing players to BUY their freedom even when they are supposed to be free agents with no punitive measure on the club, despite the public outcry of the enslaved players of the club.
Meanwhile, Mr Okoye has submitted his form having obtained endorsement from State FA Chairmen from different regions of the country.

2. Before I founded the Afa Igbo Efuna movement, I have always had the interest of the Igbo nation at heart and supported ex-president Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign because of his love and reference for the Igbo nation.
3. I am a man immensely blessed by God in all ramifications of human endeavor and have always been committed to the growth and advancement of humanity. My involvement in politics is solely informed by my desire to use the seal of power to expand the array opportunities that can be created for our people because there is a limit to which one can effect socio-economic changes by virtue his/her personal capacity.
4. It was at my “FC Ifeanyi Ubah International Stadium” that I prophesied about the 21/21 victory for Governor Willie Obiano. I Presented him a jersey with the number 21.
5. In a historic and unprecedented manner, Anambra people unanimously chose their governor, by returning Governor Willie Obiano for the second term under the platform of APGA.
6. No Governor or political party has gone into any election and scored distinction even in a presidential election. It is only APGA that has been able to do that, and I salute our brothers and sisters in Anambra for showing Ndigbo the way forward politically.
7. The present economic setback suffered by the Ndi-Igbo bears little or no resemblance to what our founding fathers contemplated. My aim of going to the Senate is to pursue that cause to a reasonable end; The Economic recovery of Ndị-Igbo.
8. About 41 items have been unjustifiably banned by the Federal Government and no one is asking questions. Ifeanyi Ubah will ask questions if voted into the Senate chambers.
9. I have confidence in the leadership of our National Chairman, Ozo Victor Oye, the National Executive Committee (NEC) and The National Working Committee (NWC) that the process of nominating a candidate in my senatorial zone and the state will be free and fair within the stipulated guidelines of the party’s constitution.
10. I will congratulate whoever emerges as the party candidate in a free and fair primary contest and work assiduously for the victory of our dear APGA in the main election in 2019.
