Inibehe Effiong, a well-known human rights attorney, has criticised the Nigerian military for going too far in making pronouncements about civil matters.
Effiong, who is well-known for his outspoken support of democracy and human rights, has stated on his X account that the military’s job is not to intimidate or engage in political matters. He declared, “The Nigerian military has no business making a statement on a civil matter.”

He underlined how crucial it is to keep military and civil jurisdictions clearly apart.
Effiong’s comments are a reaction to recent military pronouncements that were interpreted as subdued threats meant to put an end to countrywide demonstrations. He made it clear what his position was when he said, “Nobody will be intimidated by your threat.”
He also asked the military to honour its constitutional limits. Effiong urged, “Soldiers should stay in their barracks and stay out of politics.”
