EPL: Late VAR Drama As Manchester United Escapes Defeat At Old Trafford
Manchester United missed the chance to move top of the Premier League and needed a late VAR call in their favour to avoid another home defeat as Everton emerged from Old Trafford with a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
Yerry Mina’s late winner for the Toffees was ruled out by a review for offside after Andros Townsend had cancelled out Anthony Martial’s opener for United.
LATEST: Manchester United Asked To Sack Solskjaer Like Chelsea Did With Lampard
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to rest Cristiano Ronaldo from the start will be questioned as the Red Devils have now won just two of their last six games in all competitions.
A point is enough to move both sides level on points with league leaders Liverpool, who face champions Manchester City on Sunday.
Ronaldo’s heroics deep into stoppage time against Villarreal on Wednesday saved United from having a mountain to climb to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League.
But Solskjaer did not risk the 36-year-old with a third start in a week as he took his place on a star-studded bench alongside Jadon Sancho and Paul Pogba among five changes.
Martial’s inclusion was the surprise with Jesse Lingard and Donny van de Beek also left on the sidelines.
The Frenchman struggled to impress in his few previous outings this season and missed a glorious early chance when he mistimed his jump for a free header at the back post.

Everton do not have the same depth of resources in attacking areas as Rafael Benitez again had to cope without his two main sources of goals, Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, due to injury.
The visitors still created plenty of chances as Michael Keane flicked Townsend’s free-kick just wide, Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goalbound effort was blocked by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Demarai Gray tested David de Gea in the first half.
However, Everton’s good work before the break was undone on 43 minutes thanks to a moment of inspiration from Bruno Fernandes as he perfectly teed up Martial to fire beyond Jordan Pickford thanks to a slight deflection.
Solskjaer then called on Ronaldo and Sancho 10 minutes into the second half as he looked to put the game beyond Benitez’s men.
But it was Everton who struck next to expose United’s frailty on the counter-attack.

Gray won the ball back on the left and freed Doucoure into acres of space in midfield, the latter playing in Townsend to fire home his fifth goal in nine appearances for the club.
Solskjaer responded by adding another creative threat in Pogba for Fred.
England manager Gareth Southgate admitted on Thursday that Sancho’s performances since his £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund were not worthy of keeping his place in the national squad.
But Sancho was the most dangerous of United’s star substitutes as he constantly demanded the ball in search of a winner.
Ronaldo’s only chance to be the hero once more came from Sancho’s reverse pass as the Portuguese blasted across the face of goal.
Pogba then curled wide from another promising Sancho break to destabilise the Everton defence.

Yet, but for a matter of inches, United would have succumbed to a second home league defeat in eight days after Aston Villa’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford last weekend.
Mina tapped home from Tom Davies’ cross, but the Colombian had just strayed offside to United’s relief.

LATEST: Manchester United Asked To Sack Solskjaer Like Chelsea Did With Lampard
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Jamie O’Hara, has urged Manchester United to sack their manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, just as Chelsea sacked Frank Lampard in January and replaced him with Thomas Tuchel.
O’Hara gave Man United the advice while reacting to the Red Devils’ Premier League 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Old Trafford over the weekend.
According to him, Man United need to ‘cut ties’ with Solskjaer as he won’t make them title contenders this season, despite their star names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani.
BREAKING: Chelsea Sack Manager Frank Lampard
Man United are only a point off the top of the Premier League table so far this season, but O’Hara can’t see them mounting a serious title challenge before the end of the current campaign.
“Disappointing from [Manchester] United, another bad performance from them, “O’Hara told talkSPORT Breakfast.
“It just shows how wrong they are getting this with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they keep sticking by him and are not being ruthless enough.
“Look at the squad of players they have – Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo – this team has to be challenging for the title, but they are not going to because they can’t win at home.

The report added that Solskjaer is hoping to trim his squad and add new players to his team by offloading some less important players, including Martial and Van de Beek.
Martial has fallen down the pecking order at Man United, while Van de Beek has endured a miserable spell at Old Trafford after joining the club from Ajax in 2020 for £40million.
However, Lingard was heavily linked with a move away from Man United over the summer after spending the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United.
Bailly and Jones have hardly featured for United over the past two years due to their injury issues.

Former Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has given a condition to coach Manchester United.

“Conte wants to win so he would only accept a winning project. He wouldn’t accept Arsenal because they’re not immediately strong to win something, that is why he [also] said no to Spurs.
“I think he would consider Manchester United’s call, if it arrived,” Di Marzio told Sky Sports.
Conte is currently out of work, having left Serie A champions, Inter Milan, in the summer after guiding them to their first championship in 11 years.
The 52-year-old has experience of top-flight English Premier League management after taking charge of Chelsea in 2016 and winning the title in his first campaign.

Manchester United have identified three managers that could replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to the UK Mirror.

After Champions League Loss To Young Boys, Solskjaer Gets Sack Warning
Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes were substituted with 20 minutes left, when the game was still 1-1.

And there are three obvious candidates who could be available.
They are: Antonio Conte, Zinedine Zidane and Brendan Rodgers.
Conte and Zidane are immediately available, as they have been without a job since they left Inter Milan and Real Madrid, respectively.
Rodgers might be a harder option, as he is currently in charge of Leicester City.

After Champions League Loss To Young Boys, Solskjaer Gets Sack Warning
Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, has warned manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over being sacked if he does not win a trophy for the club this season.
Scholes gave the warning following Man United’s Champions League 2-1 defeat to Young Boys on Tuesday night.
The former midfield maestro believes Man United must land a trophy this season after re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer from Juventus, adding ‘Solskjaer has to win something’ this term.
Man Utd Vs Young Boys: Solskjaer Reveals Who To Blame After Shock Defeat
Recall that Man United suffered an embarrassing defeat to Young Boys in their Champions League opener despite the likes of Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho all starting against Young Boys.
“That’s what you expect from Man United [to sign the best players], it’s been a quiet time over the last few years,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“Ole has now built a squad that is capable of winning the big prizes and that’s what he has been brought to do.
“The only difference is the quality of the managers, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool have proven winners.
“You’ve got Ole, who has done a fantastic job building this squad, now is the time with that squad of players. He has to win something.”

But the game turned on its head after Aaron Wan-Bissaka received a straight red card for a high challenge on Young Boys’ Christopher Martins.
Young Boys eventually drew level, thanks to Moumi Ngameleu’s poked finish.
With the match appearing to head towards a draw, Lingard tried to find David de Gea but his backpass found Theoson Siebatcheu to tuck past the United goalkeeper.
Solskjaer has warned the squad that they must learn from their mistakes if they are to avoid another early exit from the competition.
“A lack of concentration, you make a mistake and you get done. We did that last year, conceding two sloppy counter-attacks against Basaksehir and lost that game in the last seconds today.

“So we know we’ve given ourselves a more difficult task. We did last year when everyone thought we were through after two games.
“You need 10 or 12 points: win your home games and one away from home. We’ve lost the opportunity to get three points, but we’ve got two home games next and got to focus on those two,” Solskjaer said after the game.

Legendary Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has confirmed he blocked Cristiano Ronaldo from making a possible switch to Manchester City.
According to Ferguson, he could not imagine the 36-year-old playing for their city rivals.
The Scot is understood to have phoned Ronaldo personally to persuade him to return to Old Trafford.

Alex Ferguson Shares Secrets Of Signing World-class Players
“I’m excited like everyone else, there was anticipation all day yesterday and waking up in the morning. I speak for all supporters – it’s a great day for Manchester United.
“A lot of people played their part (in bringing Ronaldo back) and I contributed knowing that really Cristiano wanted to come here and that was important. It worked very well.
“I wouldn’t say it’s emotional but it’s exciting for me and relief because I couldn’t imagine him playing for Man City, I don’t think anyone could.
“That’s why we took steps to make sure he came here and the club then followed in very well and I spoke to the Glazers and it was done. I think he will make an impact on the young players in particular, he’s got the experience to handle the occasion,” he said.
