In a significant turn of events, supporters of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have secured legal victories with substantial compensation awarded by the court. These developments come as IPOB anticipates the Supreme Court’s judgment on Nnamdi Kanu’s case, scheduled to be delivered on December 15.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the legal counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, revealed that individuals who had been held in various detention facilities by security agencies, facing a range of charges, have been discharged, and they have received compensatory damages.
One such case involves Maria Ezediaro, who was discharged by Justice M.O. Olajuwon of a Federal High Court in Abuja. She had been arrested in February 2021 when she visited the State CID, Owerri, Imo State Command to provide food and medication to a detained friend. Following her arrest, she was subjected to inhumane treatment, torture, and degradation in the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team detention facility in “Abattoir,” Abuja. She was the sole survivor among several innocent Biafrans brought with her. Justice Olajuwon struck out the four-count terrorism charge filed against Mrs. Maria Ezediaro on October 10, 2023, and awarded her freedom.

Another case involves Cletus Nwachukwu Egole, his wife Ifeyinwa Egole, Michael Uba, Ugochukwu Samuel, and Raphael Idang. They were arrested and paraded by the Imo State Command of the Nigeria Police in March 2021, subsequently transferred to the IGP Intelligence Response Team detention facility in “Abattoir,” Abuja. Following a legal battle, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, led by Justice V.S. Gaba, declared their arrest and detention as illegal and unconstitutional. The court ordered their unconditional release and awarded N100 million in compensatory damages.
Ngozichukwu Ada-Dav, who had been detained by armed operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and held in unlawful custody, also received justice. Justice Z.B. Abubakar of a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered her release and awarded N30 million in compensatory damages. Ada-Dav had been arrested in June 2021 and experienced severe torture in police custody.
These legal victories represent a significant step towards justice for those who have faced unlawful detention and mistreatment. As the cases of Nnamdi Kanu and his supporters continue to unfold, they highlight the importance of upholding human rights and the rule of law. It remains to be seen how these developments will impact the ongoing legal proceedings and discussions surrounding IPOB and its leader.
