– Anambra Veterinarians Laments Over the Proliferation of Quacks, Calls For Regulation
The free anti-rabies vaccination which held on Monday 28th September, 2020, at the Nnewi North Local Government Headquarter, also gave the association the opportunity to raise awareness about rabies.
Speaking to Anaedoonline.ng, the Chairman of Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Anambra State Chapter, Dr. Ifeanyi Obiwulu, said that the free anti-rabies vaccination which was solely sponsored by the association was intended to sensitize the public on the need to vaccinate their animals and also an opportunity for the public to know about the availability of certified Veterinary Doctors in Anambra State.
Speaking further, he expressed sadness over the proliferation of quacks masquerading as veterinary doctors in the state, who enjoy more patronage than trained veterinary doctors, according to him, this has led to the spread of rabies and other related diseases which are harmful both to animals and human beings.
He called for more improved effort from the law enforcement agencies in the state especially in the implementation of relevant laws that protects veterinary practice.
On his own part, the Secretary of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Anambra Branch, Dr. Chukwunonso Umeononigwe, said that rabies is a global issue which is prevalent in most developing countries with Nigeria not exempted, according to him, to end rabies, there must be collective efforts from both government, institutions and individuals.
Dr. Umeononigwe who also noted that the necessary veterinary laws are still dormant at the state level, giving room for quacks to operate. He urged the relevant government agencies and the security agencies to swing into action to curb the menace of the quacks in the state.
According to him, the activities of these quacks have cost people there businesses and investment.
The free vaccination exercise was attended by the Director of Veterinary Services in Anambra State, Dr. Ide Basil, Vice President of the NVMA, Dr. Victor Ughaerumba, Dr. Jude Okafor (Publicity Secretary), Dr. Mbaka Mary (Financial Secretary), Dr. Benson Agina, Dr. Nonso Anene, Dr. Ogochukwu Ukachukwu, Dr. Chuka Ibekwe and other Anambra based Veterinary Doctors.
