Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been praised for his position of giving the judiciary unrestricted authority to operate, which represents a significant development for local government (LG) autonomy in Nigeria.
Sen. Sunday Karimi, a representative for Kogi West, told reporters on Sunday in Abuja that the fight for local government autonomy is far from done and that certain state governors may oppose it.
According to the senator, the National Assembly will change the constitution to address divisive topics, such as how local government elections are conducted.
Moghalu React Over Supreme Court Verdict On LG Autonomy
Karimi stressed that in order to resolve controversial issues, such as how local government elections are conducted, the National Assembly must alter the constitution.
The senator’s comments came after the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that state governors’ withholding of cash designated for local government administrations was unlawful. The court’s ruling, which followed a case brought by the federal government, gave municipal councils financial autonomy.
Reacting to the judgement, the senator stated, “These include grey areas like the transfer of the responsibility of the conduct of elections to the local councils from the various state electoral bodies to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).”
“Some state governors will fight back. Tinubu allowed the judiciary a free hand to operate in this particular instance, irrespective of the fact that he is but a first term President who may desire a comeback in 2027.

“I thank Tinubu for mustering the courage to do the right thing. Since 1999, the third tier of government literally speaking, has been nonexistent. State governments treated them as appendages of the state governments. No President, has been able to change that.”
Senator Karimi praised Tinubu for creating history by issuing the “landmark judgement” on local government units’ financial autonomy.
