72 Nigerians and a Togolese women are to be deported from Ghana for being in the country illegally – Some of these deportees were also said to have engaged in prostitution in Ghana, apart from lacking the requisite resident permits The Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is set to deport total of 73 foreign nationals over their illegal stay in the country.
The deportees, made up of all women, includes 72 Nigerians and another from Togo. While most of them are being deported for staying in the country illegally, others are also reported to have engaged in prostitution. Some of the suspects at the immigration office in Accra.
Meanwhile, nine other Ghanaians were also arrested when a team of officers invaded the Redco Flats neighbourhood at Madina on Thursday. The Ghanaian suspects have since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service for prosecution.
Briefing the media on the matter, 2IC at the Public Affairs of the GIS, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI), Linda Asare Mantey, said all the suspects were arrested in and around the Junior Hotel at Madina, which is known for prostitution activities.
She explained that the Immigration Service invaded the place after gathering intelligence that certain illegal acts were being perpetrated in the area. She disclosed that the foreign nationals among the suspects will all be deported whiles the Ghanaians will face prosecution. “It is illegal to come to the country and engage in prostitution,” Supt. Mantey said.
According to her, although eight of the foreign nationals claimed they had passports, they could not produce any such documents. She added that “the GIS has requested for their travel certificates from the Nigerian High Commission as well as the Togo Embassy to send them back to their various countries.”
Supt. Mantey further warned that the Ghana Immigration Service “will go after” owners and managers of hotel facilities who hire their facilities as prostitution destinations.

The minister of interior retired Lt.- Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, disclosed this in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Mohammed Umar, on Tuesday, September 11, in Abuja.
