INEC Officials and Registered Voters Trade Blame Over PVC Collection  in Nnewi North/South 

It is less than two months to the 2019 election, still, a lot of people are yet to collect their permanent voter’s card (PVC) which is the only identification required to vote during the elections. Some residents in Nnewi complained about lack of time to go to the INEC office that is situated at the local government.

When Anaedoonline visited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office at Nnewi South local government area in Ukpor, We were able to see thousands of the Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) which have not been collected. The INEC officials on duty declined to speak to us, but she mentioned that there are still many PVCs yet to be collected. “The number of people coming around is low, we advise the registered electorates in the 20 Units in Nnewi South should visit the INEC office at Ukpor to collect their PVC’s”, she said.

The INEC official also mentioned that the voter’s card will be returned to INEC office in Awka, Anambra state if the eligible electorates do not come for them.

Anaedoonline, also visited Nnewi North Local government to ascertain the state of things at the INEC station. It was observed that there were quite a large number of people waiting to collect their PVC’s but there were still thousands of PVC’s yet to be collected.

Speaking to another INEC official at the Nnewi North Local government, he said: “in a day we can give out about 130-150 PVC’s in a day”.

Barrister Owete Emmanuel, the man in charge at the INEC office Nnewi North, said the collection process has improved compared to previous weeks. He also said the commission intends to move into the ten wards by next week to continue the distribution and make things easy for the populace.

Barrister Owete said there is no exact date to end the PVC collection but it will most likely stop few days to the presidential election. He encouraged Ndi-Nnewi to visit the local government and different wards to collect their PVCs.

Some residents who were at the INEC office, Nnewi North local government, complained about long hours they had to wait to collect the PVCs.

An anonymous electorate said, “maybe INEC needs to employ more staff to help give out the cards and they should be more organized. They should also take their work seriously; one of the staff came in about ten minutes ago (10:20 am) while we have been here waiting for them”.

Another electorate said, “I have been here for about an hour and they have been saying the same story, INEC should do something about it, most of us have other things doing”.

As at the time of this report, there was about ten staff on duty at the INEC office in Nnewi North local government.
