WHY WE POSTPONED 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS -INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, has given reasons for the shifting of the general elections scheduled Saturday, February 16th, and Saturday, March 2, respectively.

INEC shifted the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, February 16, and fixes it for Saturday, February 23; while that of the Governorship and Houses Assembly scheduled for Saturday, March 2, now shifts to Saturday, March 9.

The Commission, in a statement signed by its chairman, Prof. Mahmood Hakubu, said the postponement became necessary because of logistics problems.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, sat on Friday, February 15, 2019, and reviewed its preparation for the 2019 general elections scheduled for Saturday, 16th February 2019, and Saturday, March 2, 2019.

“Following a careful review of the implementation of the logistics and operational plan, and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to a conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no more feasible.

“Consequently, the Commission has decided to reschedule the Presidential and National Assembly elections to Saturday, February 23, 2019. Furthermore, Governorship, State Assemblies and Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections has been rescheduled to Saturday, March
9, 2019. This will afford the Commission the opportunity to address identified challenges in order to maintain the standard of our elections…”
