Anambra: Nonso Okafor Calls For Prison Decongestion.

In a bid to further improve the adjudication of criminal justice in Anambra State, the Member Representing Nnewi North in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nonso Okafor (Smart), has called for the institutionalization of speedy trial and other non-custodial measures to enhance the decongestion of prisons in Anambra State.

Speaking during the confirmation of Hon. Justice Ijem Onwuamaegbu as the Chief Judge of Anambra State, at yesterday’s plenary, Hon. Nonso Okafor, decried the practice where some suspects are held in remand for extended periods of time, running into years.

He particularly bemoaned the situation where those accused of minor offences spent years awaiting trial.

While commending Hon. Justice Ijem Onwuamaegbu for recently using her prerogative power in discharging some inmates, Nonso Okafor advocated for the need to kick-start discussions with stakeholders to roll out a better system, which will not erode the basic human rights of suspects.
