Lawan Seeks Ban Of Police, Soldiers From Trains

Ahmed Lawan. Senate President

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Wednesday called for the ban of soldiers and other security personnel from using trains in order to check the alarming rate of insecurity, especially kidnappings in the country.

There have been reports of men in uniform rushing to use train services in Abuja and Kaduna to avoid being kidnapped on the Abuja-Kaduna Highway.

But Lawan, who spoke on a motion under national importance, sponsored by Senator Dino Melaye, noted that the presence of military and other security personnel on the road would give civilians confidence and keep the criminals at bay.

He said, “The military, the police and other paramilitary agencies should allow ordinary people to use the train. Let them ply the roads, because that would make other road users to use the roads.”

Melaye, who is the Chairman, Senate committee on Aviation, had expressed concern over the activities of kidnappers along Lokoja-Abuja expressway, which resulted in the kidnapping of 36 people in September alone.

He lamented the loss of lives due to the activities of the kidnappers.

He said, “In a country, where people pay their tax, our responsibility is to uphold the tenets of the constitution, we should display citizen diplomacy where the lives and property of Nigerians are involved.”

The lawmakers unanimously called for an anti kidnapping legislation and the implementation of ahoc committee on security report.

The Senate urged the security agencies to adequately secure the Lokoja-Abuja road and other major roads in the country.
