Youths Boils Over The Disconnection Of The Electricity Supply Of Igwe Nnewi Palace.

Following the disconnection of the electricity supply of the palace of His Royal Highness, Igwe Kenneth Orizu, CON, by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Nnewi Youths earlier today, Friday, 4th October, 2019, planned a massive protest against the electricity distribution commission.

According to information gathered by Anaedoonline, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) earlier in the week, disconnected the electricity supply of the revered palace of Nnewi Traditional Ruler, His Royal Highness, Igwe Kenneth Orizu (III), thereby leaving the palace in total darkness.

According to reports, the Electricity supply was disconnected despite the fact that the palace has been up-to-date with payment of its electricity bills.

Angered by the action, Nnewi Youths under the umbrella of Nnewi Youth Forum earlier today, Friday, 4th September, 2019, scheduled a protest against the management of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for what they described as an insult and injustice to Nnewi town.

According to the youth body, the peaceful demonstration was to record their grievances over the neglect to the stool of Nnewi traditional institution.

However following the intervention of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Chief Dr. Emeka Offor and the Senator Representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Senator Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, the planned protest was suspended earlier this morning.

According to the officials of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in Nnewi, the disconnection was due to their unscheduled maintenance of their facility around the palace. They however apologized for the poor communication by their technical officers.

It is important to note that according to the Electric Power Reform Act, 2005, “A distribution company may only disconnect supply to a customer’s address when the customer has not paid the amount correctly billed for that supply address by the relevant payment date.

Provided the payment date is clearly shown on the bill, payment date is at least 10 working days from the date of delivery of the bill to the supply address or a delivery provided by the customer, which is acceptable to the distribution company.

Provided the payment date has not been superseded by a subsequent payment date issued to the same customer for the same supply address and the period between the payment date and the date of disconnection is not less than three months.
