A MAN standing trial for allegedly killing his girlfriend has told a Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere that he fled the scene of the crime to save his life.
Thirty-seven-year-old Kelechukwu Chukwuanugo put up the defense yesterday under cross-examination by the Lagos State Prosecutor Tunde Sunmonu, adding that he did not know she would die.
He did not say he was in any immediate danger after “killing” his partner.
Chukwuanugo did tell the court that he withdrew N120,000 from the deceased’s account and fled to Cote d’Ivoire.
The prosecutor had alleged that the defendant killed the deceased by strangling her with a wrapper.
He said the defendant committed the alleged offense on July 19, 2014, at 2 pm at Plot 34, Green Estate, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.
The defendant was first arraigned on January 20, 2016, and was remanded in prison custody.
When he opened his defense on March 5, the defendant told the court that he was in love with the deceased and had no intention of killing her.
He claimed the woman died when both of them had a misunderstanding which led to a scuffle.

He also claimed to have sustained an injury in his scrotum while struggling with the deceased.
During the proceedings yesterday, Chukwuanugo told the court that after noticing that the deceased was not moving, he took her ATM card, withdrew the sum of N120,000 from the deceased’s account and fled to Cote d’Ivoire.
“I was running for my life, there was nothing I could do for her when I noticed she was not moving after falling. I did not know she will die; we were dragging her phone, she slipped and fell on the floor,” Chukwuanugo narrated.
The defendant said he was arrested by the police at the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire by the roadside where he parked his car.
Defense counsel J.C.Jiakponna told the court that the hospital where the defendant was treated was not forthcoming in giving evidence and that their evidence would help his client’s case.
He also said that the police refused to produce the defendant’s international passport, drivers’ license and the ATM card seized from him.
He tendered before the court the letters written to the hospital and the police, both of which were admitted in evidence.
Defense counsel told the court that he had no other witness and closed its defense.
Justice Adedayo Akintoye adjourned the matter until November 27 for both counsels to file their final written addresses.
He also told the court that the police refused to produce the defendant’s seized international passport, drivers’ license and the ATM card would be fatal to his case.
The defense counsel tendered letters written to the hospital and the police which were admitted in evidence and closed his case.
Justice Adedayo Akintoye adjourned until November 27 for both counsels to file their written addresses.
