The government of Anambra State has warned all street traders to leave the roadside. The Zonal Commander of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA, Brigade, Daniel Martins, said the agency plans to keep their men in the areas, to ensure that defaulting traders do not resume their activities in the spots.

Speaking to journalists, Martins explained saying the essence of the action was to free up space on the busy roads to allow free flow of traffic, to save lives, and keep the areas aesthetically appealing, especially during the ember months. A combined team of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade, Idemili North Traffic Decongestion Authority and Anambra Traffic Management Agency, ATMA, removed scores of traders and motorists doing business on the road-sides of some popular business areas in Nkpor and Ogidi, both in Idemili North Local Government Area.

The popular areas where the enforcement team carried their operations include New Spare Parts Market, New Market Road Nkpor, Obosi Road by Nkpor Junction and Mercedes Avenue, Nkpor-Agu, Afor Nkpor Market, Tarzan, Building Materials Market, Ogidi and Ugwunwasike.

The traders most of whose goods were confiscated were also selling on top of drainage channels, after they had initially been forewarned of the dislodgement, and were told to move back to positions a bit distant from the roads.

The case was also the same with motorists, who parked their vehicles indiscriminately by the busy roadsides, thereby causing gridlocks.

On his part, the Chairman of Idemili North Traffic Decongestion Authority, INTDA, Mr. Gilbert Okoye, suggested that barricade walls be built to separate the roads from traders selling on their edges.
