Anambra Govt Launches  Campaign On Tuberculosis Awareness

Anambra state government has officially lunched Tuberculosis awareness project in Awka, the state capital .The lunching attracted relevant health stockholders, tuberculosis control vanguards, TB partners amongst others

According to the World Health Organization, Tuberculosis is one of the top ten causes of death globally. In 2018 alone, ten million people worldwide were infected with TB and about one point five million people died from the disease.

Reports say, Nigeria ranks number one in Africa and sixth in the world in terms of the number of people with TB diseases.

Launching the programme, the Commissioner for Health, Anambra State Dr. Vincent Okpala launched the programme represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Anambra state , Dr. John Ndibe thanked all the TB partners in the state for the awareness campaign which he said is vital in eradicating the scourge of the disease in Anambra State.

Okpala noted that Governor Willie Obiano is very passionate about the healthy living of Ndi Anambra and must support the campaign to succeed in the state, and revealed that there is a state of the art facility tuberculosis centre at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.

Anambra State Programme Officer, Tuberculosis and Bruli Ulcer, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu said that the aim of the campaign was to create awareness about tuberculosis through the TB control vanguards for people to know about it, get diagnosed and receive treatment for free, as tuberculosis is curable if detected early enough

The Founder, Action Health Incorporated who trained the vanguards in Anambra State, Dr. Uwemedimo Esiet, represented by Dr. Tunde Onosanya maintained that ending tuberculosis by 2030 is among the health targets of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

A tuberculosis survivor, Mr. Chukwuebuka Nwaezuoke from Nnobi, Idemili South Council Area thanked the TB partners and Anambra State for doing a great work in the state.

The Director of Public Health and Disease Control, Anambra State’s Ministry of Health, Dr. Uchechukwu Onyejimbe was equally present at the event which featured drama, question and answer session among others.
