2% Of Nigeria Population Suffers Disability – NPC

The Federal Commissioner of National Population Commission (NPC) in Ebonyi State, Chief Darlington Okereke yesterday disclosed that 2% of women and men in the country between ages of 15 and above have difficulty or cannot function in at least one domain of disability such as seeing, hearing, communicating, remembering or concentrating, walking or climbing steps and washing all over the body or dressing up.

He noted that the discovery was contained in the report of the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS). He maintained that 9% of women and 10% of men have some difficulty in at least one domain.

Okereke said this during the Dissemination and Official Launch of the NDHS in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, capital, the Federal Commissioner of National Population Commission(NPC). He noted that the data on disability would be of significance to the Social Development Statistics in planning for the well being of persons living with disabilities in the country.

He also disclosed that 20% of children in the country have sickle cell trait and called on policymakers, relevant government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, the organized private sector and other data end-users to act and identify priority action areas.

In his words; “it is our hope that at the end of this official launch of the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey report, policymakers, relevant government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, the organized private sector and other data end-users will take this report as call to action, study it very carefully and use the data to identify priority action areas”.

Speaking, Governor David Umahi who was represented by Secretary to the State Government Dr. Kenneth Ugbala said the report would help policymakers and government to carry out their responsibilities.

He noted that other previous NDHS published since the last one in 1990 has helped the federal and state governments in taking decisions in the dissemination of health facilities in line with areas of needs.
