Tarrrare was a French showman and soldier noted for his unusual eating habits. Able to eat vast amounts of meat, he was constantly hungry and his family couldn’t keep providing for him so he was forced to leave home as a teenager.
He ended up being a warm-up act for a travelling man. He would swallow corks, live animals and a basketful of apples. He later started working as a street performer .
At the start of first coalition war, he joined the French revolutionary Army. With military rations unable to satisfy his huge appetite, he started eating from gutters and refuse heaps but he was still hungry and getting exhausted. He was hospitalized due to the exhaustion and became subject to various medical experiments.
To test his eating capacity in which among he ate a meal intended for 15 people in one sitting and also live cats. The military then tried to use him to pass documents by making him swallow them and send them to soldiers at the battleground but he was captured by the enemy and beaten severely.
Haunted by his experience, he agreed to submit himself to be treated of his condition. The doctors could not succeed so one day he was ejected from the hospital and four years later, he died after suffering tuberculosis and diarrhea.
