Burna Boy strolled into the 62nd Grammy Awards ceremony which was held on January 26, 2020, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles with hopes high that he would be the first Nigerian to win a Grammy. When the whole thing was over, he trudged back home to Nigeria with zip-zero, having been blanked in the Best World Album Music category in which he was nominated, a prize that has never been won by any Nigerian — not even Fela, not then, and not now.

Maybe, just maybe the world was ready to embrace the music and talent of Burna Boy. But even with his enviable nomination following a stellar album “African Giant” (some say his best work ever), the Academy voters feels it wasn’t his time. And the truth is, it may never be.

And so it remains impossible to figure out what exactly motivates the voting members of today’s Recording Academy — but no matter what, they cannot be blamed for lack of education as narrated by supermodel Naomi Campbell which caused a stir on Twitter a day after Burna Boy lost at the Grammys.

Recently, it seems that the singer is still pained for losing the award that night at the Staples Centre as he went on to brag on his Twitter account that he is the best after Fela — a joke taken too far.

Here’s the honest truth, Burna Boy’s music has grown since his debut album. His latest album “African Giant” added another element to his storytelling in music with the talks of social awareness, political stances, art evident in his lyrics.

He lost the Grammy in a category that has strong contenders like Altin Gün, Nathalie Joachim With Spektral Quartet, and Angelique Kidjo who he has sampled one of her songs in “Anybody”.

Burna Boy is good and he is having the best moment of his life, but Wizkid and Davido may win the Grammys before him.
