Fire Guts Apongbon Market In Lagos

The popular Apongbon market in Lagos Island was gutted by fire on Sunday morning. The Ebute Ero Underbridge section of the market went up in flames around 10:45pm.

Shops and property were affected and efforts are on to stop the spread.The cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet.

The Lagos State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), among others are at the scene.

It will be recalled that In the early hours of Monday, January 12, the popular Balogun market in Lagos was engulfed by a raging inferno that destroyed property worth thousands of naira as the fire razed some shops in the market.

Mr Ibramhim Farinloye who is the Spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Southwest said “At 04:36 hours, there was a serious fire outbreak at Balogun market Lagos Island.”

Also, December 2019, No fewer than 15 shops were razed in a fire outbreak at the popular Owode-Onirin Market at Ikorodu area of Lagos state on Sunday

Traders mostly, dealing in car spare parts lamented as goods worth millions of naira were destroyed by the fire outbreak.

The Director General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who was at the scene of the inferno said the fire emanated from one of the several lines of shops within the market.

Although, the cause of the fire could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
