Taxation: Private Schools In Anambra Begins Strike

The warning strike which started today, Monday, March 26th, 2020, is expected to end on Wednesday.

According to information made available to Anaedonline.com, the warning strike is in protest against multiple taxation, invasion of schools by thugs, destabilization of schools by Government agencies, extortion and the rest of other ill practices.

The strike which was declared by the coalition of private schools’ union in Anambra is made up of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), owners of Private Schools Association of Nigeria (OPSAN), United Independent Proprietors of Private Schools Association of Nigeria (UIPPSAN), Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFAD)

Speaking to our correspondent, a Private School Proprietor who pleaded anonymity for the fear of victimization, said that the state government through the Ministry of Education directed every private school in Anambra State to pay One Hundred Thousand Naira (#100, 000) every school term which makes it Three Hundred Thousand Naira (#300,000) annually.

According to him, this is not among the other taxes and levies being made by paid by private schools in the state.

He said, “We suffering from multiple taxation, we pay so many taxes and levies to both the Ministry of Education and other government agencies, every day our schools are being invaded by a different task force from different government agencies who exhort from us, where are we going to get all those money they are demanding from us?  though we are not a charity organization, we trying to make education affordable to Anambrians, yet instead of government to support us, they are killing our schools with multiple taxation”

“We are not against paying of taxes, what we are saying is that the taxes should be reasonable taking cognizance of the fact that we are in the education sector. There should a harmonized payment system and not invading our schools with thugs, this multiple taxation and harassment needs to stop”

Efforts to get the reaction of the Ministry of Education in Anambra State at the time of writing proved abortive.
