Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute
respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) as stated by wikipedia. The disease was
first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic.
First coronavirus case confirmed in Ondo state
The virus is mainly spread during close contact, and by small droplets produced when people cough, sneeze, or talk.
One can also catch COVID-19 by touching a contaminated surface and then their face. The
virus can survive on surfaces up to 72 hours.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced in February 2020 that COVID-19 is the official name of the disease. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus explained
that CO stands for corona, VI for virus and D for disease, while 19 is for when the outbreak was first identified: 31 December 2019.
What is important
1. Its highly infectious: The WHO, CDC and NCDC state that it is primarily spread during close contact and by small droplets produced when people cough, sneeze, or talk. Close contact being within 1–3 m (3 ft 3 in–9 ft 10 in).
A study in Singapore found that an uncovered coughing can lead to droplets travelling up to 4.5 meters (15 feet). Social distancing is very important and shouldn’t be taken for granted.
The virus survives for hours to days on surfaces. Specifically, the virus was found to be
detectable for one day on cardboard, for up to three days on plastic and stainless steel, and for up to four hours on copper. This, however, varies based on the humidity and temperature.
Its best we know Covid-19 is highly infectious, teach knows around us and take adequate
precaution.
2. Safety is key (Follow Preventive Measures); It’s very necessary people know the preventive measures to reduce the chances of infection.
These includes staying at home, avoiding crowded places, washing hands with soap and water often and for at least 20 seconds, practicing good respiratory hygiene and avoiding touching the eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands. One may choose to wear surgical mask especially those taking care of covid-19 patients.
In an instance someone have been in-contact with the virus, probably touched a wall already contaminated, by washing hands thoroughly, the virus is washed off and the person is safe.
Identify and Isolate Suspected Cases In all workplaces where exposure to the COVID-19 may occur, prompt identification and isolation of potentially infectious individuals is a critical first step in protecting workers, visitors, and others at the worksite.
3. Its not a death sentence: Nigeria has so far recorded 210 cases of coronavirus, with four deaths and twenty five recoveries as at 4th April 2020.
World statistics show there’s 80% survival chance compared to 20% death in all closed cases. Although a lot of deaths have been recorded, the important thing to remember is that people can survive this disease.
Dr. Ngozi Ezike, the director of Illinois Department of Public Health, said a recent survey showed that after 7 days 50 percent of people with COVID-19 had made a full recovery.
“I want people to be hopeful, so we will provide these numbers daily,” Ezike said. “It is not a death sentence.”
4. Create fun activities during quarantine/ be supportive to persons affected by COVID-19 induced hardship by COVID-19 induced hardship
The UN estimates that 1.25 billion children are currently at home as a result of the coronavirus lockdown. “It’s quite tough teaching your own kids because they won’t listen to you, and you have no tolerance or patience.
So rest-assured, you are not alone!” COVID-19 outbreak has caused changes to our everyday lives in many ways. But while we are home we can decide to jog daily,
bond with our kids, learn to play a guitar or piano, learn a new language, how to bake and so many other things.
A lot of organisations, groups, people have made huge donations to ameliorate sufferings. We can give no matter how little.
We should learn to share what we have. Give bread to the next family. It maybe all they will eat today. A lot of business have been shut because of this pandemic. Daily income earners are worst hit. It’s our prerogative not to allow our neighbours die of hunger during quarantine.
5. Do not be an alarmist (Stop Sharing False information)
It’s our collective duty not to create panic as tensions are already high and people are scared.
Covid-19 has created a lot of imbalance in our lives. All world events are on stand still, humans are at war with Covid-19, while our health workers have become soldiers. It is unfair sharing unverified information from mischief makers. Fact check every post, discussion as regards covid-19.
A lot of misinformation have unnerved health workers, even majority of the population
staying home.
The incident that happened in Warri has has a lot of gory images attributed to it which are
entirely false. Always share information from verifiable sources.
What is not important.
1. Conspiracy theories
Kindly disregard all conspiracy theroies linked to covid-19, they are unimportant.
2. Economic Conspiracy
• 5G Conspiracy
• BioWeapon Conspiracy
• New world order Conspiracy
• Billgate Conspiracy
• Illuminati Conspiracy
• Movies and Novels prediction
All these are irrelevant. What is important is staying alive and staying safe.
2. Attacks on government(s)
We are tempted to join the bandwagon at this time in blaming our government at various levels.
Some states have been proactive while others reactive. Staying home is a government directive and its also common sense.
Staying home will protect us and also protect our loved ones and neighbours.
If one gets infected, its most likely family members may catch the virus. Attacking the
government at this point is not important. Positive views should be shared rather than attack.
Governments arr overwhelmed. The 1st world is overwhelmed. Let’s support our government at different levels, then we can go back to politics when this virus is gone.
Covid-19 doesn’t care if you are Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jew, APC, PDP, Rich, Poor, African, Hispanic or Chinese All humans are united against this virus.
3.When Will this Pandemic End: Covid-19 pandemic will end when there are no new infections and remaining cases are closed.
Hopefully the remaining cases would then recover from the virus. Dwelling and troubling oneself on when this pandemic will end is unimportant. Surely it will end, whats most important is our safety. Lets stay safe and not get infected.
4. Following the trend: A lot persons have been broken by the daily death toll from this pandemic. Health workers are trained to manage shock, they are trained to save lives. Let’s not sink into depression by following the trend much. Its not important knowing the death toll especially if it affects you emotionally. Focus on the no of recoveries and pray we have more recoveries than death.
conclusion, we share only one religion, that religion is humanity, and this crisis is bringing
humanity out of people. The world is changing, it is healing, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Pollution is being cleared off, the equilibrium is being restored, and at the end of this, the world will heal. There are so many lessons of humanity to take on from there: racism, health, love and how to embrace uncertainty and make something out of it.
