Italy has an estimated population of 65 million citizens and was the world hotspot for coronavirus, with recorded death of over 27,000, with over 205,000 confirmed cases, and over 75,000 recovered.

According to the latest Worldometer figures, there are 205,463 coronavirus infections in the country and 27,967 deaths.

However, When Antonia Mortensen was pulled over by police while driving recently in Milan, the northern Italian city where she is staying, it wasn’t for a traffic offense. It was to instruct her fellow passenger to sit in the back of the car and to check that both were wearing face masks.

“We were told we cannot both sit in the front,” said the CNN journalist, who was on her way to the hospital with her partner to visit a sick relative.

‘Like a bomb had gone off on either side of their chest.’ London doctors speak of ‘continuous tsunami’.

“We have a special certificate giving us permission to go to the hospital,” she said, adding that the relative does not have coronavirus.

Such is the tight restrictions on Italians now living in one of the deadliest hotspots of the global coronavirus pandemic.
