The Federal Government of in a bid to protect its citizens said travel restriction would be placed on some countries into Nigeria, the Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika.

According to a statement by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, on Monday, July 13, the move was necessary to ensure safety at the airports and as well to protect the country at large.

The minister revealed that it was one of the reasons why the government had not approved the resumption of commercial international flights into and out of Nigeria.

Speaking at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 yesterday Sirika, said, “On the question about when we are beginning international travels, certainly you are very aware that so many countries had placed a ban on countries that we cannot go even from Nigeria.”

“Also Nigeria, of course, will place ban on other countries that cannot come in here, because everyone is trying to keep safe,” he noted.

He noted further that the government will carry out a study at this time and as well liaise with all the stakeholders to decide when it is safe for the commencement of commercial international flights.

Sirika said even though operators in the sector had longed to see the airspace open to local and international flights, the safety of travellers and the country must be put into consideration first.

“In aviation, we want to open like yesterday because we are losing money; we are bleeding. But we must stay alive first before we are able to make money,” the minister reiterated.

He also disclosed that domestic flights at airports have been unstable in order not to allow crowding at the airports.

Anaedoonline.com reported earlier that the Federal Government through the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has advised Nigerians to arrive at airports, 90 minutes before their flight departure time amid coronavirus in Nigeria.
