Abia Records First COVID-19 Death

The Commissioner of Information, Chief John Okeiyi Kalu, has announced the first case of COVID-19 death in Abia state, a 25-year-old man, who died in the isolation center.

The Government of Abia State has said that it will continue to protect the identity of individuals that have contracted the dreaded coronavirus in line with internationally accepted protocols, emphasizing that calls by the people to make names of persons who had contracted the disease public, was against global practice.

This comes as it announced the first death of a victim of the disease in the State.

He regretted that people were not adhering to the guidelines to safeguard themselves from the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, the State team on community testing and detection of persons carrying the coronavirus had collected blood samples from 47 persons on a visit to Ugwunagbo Local Government Area for diagnosis. They team has continued with other rural areas.

The government hopes to cover the whole state, conducting door to door test.

The Chairman of the Council, Chief Peter Aguomba, said the visit and taking blood samples of the citizenry, will help early detection of carriers and from there check the spread of the disease among rural dwellers.

Emmanuel Ononiwu escaped from a holding facility in Aba just before he was to be moved to an isolation centre. He switched off his phone afterwards and also his wife has remained unreachable despite calls for her to present herself for a test (read here).

The Abia state government has now released photos of Ononiwu in a bid to recapture him and force him to go into isolation.

Sharing photos of the COVID-19 patient, the Abia state government wrote: “Wanted Person: Emmanuel Ononiwu. These are file pictures of Emmanuel Ononiwu who was declared wanted by Abia State Government after he tested positive to COVID-19 and absconded from a holding center in Aba prior to being moved into isolation
