The political development in Edo state is getting intense as the south-south state prepares for the September governorship election.
A report from Channels TV indicates the police the state’s House of Assembly complex has been taken over by the police.
Anaedoonline.ng gathers that dozens of the security officials stormed the complex in the early hours of Thursday, August 6, while patrol vehicles were stationed there.
The police reportedly took the action following a reported threat of an attack on the facility. The police officers were led to the assembly by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Ayoola Ajala.
Earlier, Anaedoonline.ng reported that the deputy speaker of the Edo state House of Assembly, Hon. Yekini Idiaye had been impeached. He was impeached on Wednesday, August 5 during a plenary session of the assembly in Benin city, the state capital.
In his place, Honourable Roland Asoro, the member representing Orhionmwon II Constituency in the Edo state House of Assembly was elected deputy speaker.
Idiaye had earlier declared his support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Reacting to Idiaye’s declaration, the Edo state deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu said: “Hon Agbaje and Hon. Yekini collected N40 million each to throw their support for Ize-Iyamu.
Oshiomhole also gave N5 million each to councillors to switch loyalty and support the APC candidate.”
The deputy governor also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ask Oshiomhole where he got such an amount of money to bribe the lawmakers.
“We know President Muhammadu Buhari is fighting corruption and should call Oshiomhole and ask him where he got such money from,” he concluded.
In another report, Adams Oshiomhole, immediate past national chairman of the APC, has reacted after Governor Obaseki vowed to “meet violence with violence” should the opposition go haywire during the forthcoming poll.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the gubernatorial election in the state for September 19, leaving the election a two-horse race between APC and main opposition PDP.
Speaking with Arise TV on Monday, August 3, Oshiomhole berated Obaseki for vowing to unleash violence on members of the opposition.
