Senate President, 9 Others Who Have Spent One Year Without A Single Bill

Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan and former Governor of Kano, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau (APC, Kano), are among a list of 10 senators who have spent a year without sponsoring a single bill according to this report compiled by Daily Trust.

Section 4 of the 1999 Constitution as amended states that the responsibility of The National Assembly is “to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the Federation or any part thereof with respect to any matter included in the Exclusive Legislative List”.

The primary responsibility of a legislator includes making laws on issues of public interest; representing the interest of citizens; and oversight of government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The new 9th Senate was sworn in on June 11, 2019, and since then, more than 450 bills have been proposed, according to a study by the Daily Trust.

Other senators who have spent a year warming the seat without introducing a single bill include; Adamu Bulkachuwa (APC, Bauchi), Christopher Stephen Ekpenyong (PDP, Akwa Ibom), and Godiya Akwashiki (APC, Nasarawa).

The rest include of; Emmanuel Yisa Orker-Jev (PDP, Benue), Kabir Abdullahi Barkiya (APC, Katsina), Nicholas Olubukola Tofowomo (PDP, Ondo), Peter Onyeluka Nwaoboshi (PDP, Delta) and Lawali Hassan Anka (PDP, Zamfara).

Senators Ignatius Datong Longjan (APC, Plateau) and Senator Sikiru Adebayo Osinowo (APC, Lagos) did not present a single resolution until their deaths in February and June 2020 respectively.
