It was royal blessings galore for the top contender for the position of the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Dr. Joseph Ugboaja who on Friday paid a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler of Nnewi, HRM, Igwe Dr KON Orizu 111 and the Obis of Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewichi.

 

Some selected officers of the Army War College of Nigeria (AWCN) took a tour of the Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) company on Thursday 27th of August, 2020. The company tour is part of its academic curriculum where the college embarks on Environmental Study Tour(EST) to some national strategic establishments to enable the participants to have a first-hand knowledge of the contributions of these establishments to achieve defence objectives.

Chelsea Football Club has completed the signing of one of the big names in world football with Thiago Silva joining on a one-year contract, with the club having the option of a further 12 months. His signing follows the addition on Wednesday of Ben Chilwell to the squad and continues the long tradition of top Brazilian players gracing the pitch for Chelsea. Malang Sarr also joined this week and will be on loan in 2020/21.

 

A new faction has pulled out from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which includes some Northern lawyers who are against the decision of the NEC to disinvite Governor Nasir El-Rufai from the Annual General meeting, they are to be known as the New Nigerian Bar Association. The NBA on August 20, withdrew its invitation to Governor El-Rufai to the AGM after some lawyers demanded it. Some lawyers argued that Governor El-Rufai had over the years abused the rights of people who are under his care. Read here.

 

Apparently worried by the violent dimension that campaigns are going, the Oba of Benin Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Square II Thursday, said he would invite all the governorship candidates participating in the coming governorship election in the state to his palace to sign a peace pact especially, the two major political parties; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

West African countries on Friday insisted on a return to civilian rule in Mali, where rebel troops ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on August 18 and held him for nine days. “If we consider that the question of (Keita’s) release is resolved, it is not the same concerning the return to constitutional order, which pre-supposes that all troops return to their barracks,” President Mahamadou Issoufou Keita of Niger, who currently chairs the regional bloc ECOWAS, told a video summit.

Zamfara State government has declared three days of mourning after sixteen supporters of the Governor, Bello Matawalle were killed in a road accident. The accident occurred on Wednesday when a truck lost control in heavy rain and rammed into four vehicles conveying supporters of Governor Bello Matawalle, they said. It occurred at Tsafe, 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the state capital Gusau.

 

In the Opebi area of Lagos State, a yet to be identified helicopter has crashed into a building. It was gathered that the copter dropped from the sky around 12:17 pm at the Salvation Bus Stop in Opebi. No casualty or death has, however, been reported as of the time of filing this report. Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the incident to reporters in a telephone conversation.

The state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akwa Ibom state has directed its members to boycott a press conference planned for Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation. In a statement on Friday, the chapter asked journalists not to attend any activity organised by the former minister.

 

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced Friday he will resign over health problems, in a development that kicks off a leadership contest in the world’s third-largest economy. “I have decided to step down from the post of the prime minister,” he told a press conference, saying he was suffering from a recurrence of the ulcerative colitis that ended his first term in office.
