— attributes some roads accident to lack of a good job by FRSC operatives
— wants Federal Government to review the operations of the Corps

The Spiritual leader of the Igbo nation Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka (Ogilisi Igbo) has angrily lashed out at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) over what he observed and described as “poor service to the general public” by the operatives of the Corps, accusing the operatives of “lack of competence and zest in operation”.

Speaking to journalists at his office in Oba, Chief Ezeonwuka explained with dismay that he has taken time to look at the services being rendered by the Corps and found out that the operatives lack thrust and professionalism required of a very important public servant assigned to safeguard motorists and travellers from road accidents.

The Ogilisi Igbo allegedly observed that the Corps operatives are not intercepting, arresting, penalizing or even prosecuting motorists with offensive tendencies or whose vehicle do not meet the standard required to ply the road adding that the way motorists both private and commercial with offensive tendencies move freely on the road without being intercepted by Road Safety operatives beats one’s imagination.

The Igbo leader wondered what the Road Safety operative are standing on the road for because according to him “they do not seem to be intercepting, arresting and penalizing vehicles with faults such as vehicle without brake light, without a traffic light, without fictional Head headlamps and yet move in the night, without side mirrors and without good tyres

He also alleged that most of the lorries that move in the night with dangerous extra light mounted at the forehead which is highly offensive to the law are not being intercepted and impounded as the law demands. He went further to allege that some motorists who do not have a relevant driven license, functional fire extinguisher, functional seat belt and most worrisome vehicles with overload are not being intercepted by the Corps operatives.

He added ” lorries, tippers, interstate commercial buses and even taxis carry excess loads and move freely on the high ways without interception by anybody. One then has to wonder what the Road Safety officials are doing on the road. Are they collecting bribe from these motorists to allow them to move freely with all the offences that are capable to cause accidents and are causing accidents on the roads?

Going further, he said “I do not understand what is going on. Take one more instance, it is an offence to answer a phone call while on steering yet people do it without being intercepted. I think the Federal Government should investigate the activities of FRSC operatives with a view to find out if they are collecting bribe and compromising standard on the road because the way motorists move freely with various punishable shows something is wrong somewhere.

“So as the Spiritual leader of the Igbo nation, I am calling on the Federal Government to urgently review the operations of the FRSC with a view to addressing the issues raised above. While attributing some road accidents to lack of a good job on the side FRSC operatives, he charged the operatives to be up and doing and endeavour to collaborate with government in the most critical area of putting an adequate check on the condition of the road.

“The Road Safety officials are always on the road so they are in a better position to draw the attention of the government on the condition of the roads. How can you be on the road to prevent accident and yet watch road develop bad spot without making any effort to get government attention to it, it shows that you don’t know your work” he maintained.
