Thousands of commuters were stranded for over five hours on Thursday as #ENDSARS protesters barricaded the ever-busy Benin-Lagos expressway at Ugbowo in front of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
The newly-constructed pedestrian bridge in front of the main campus of UNIBEN was converted to an emergency point for dishing out popular revolutionary songs from big loudspeakers.
Policemen drafted to the scene kept an eye on the peaceful protesters.
President of UNIBEN Students’ Union Government (SUG), Benjamin Egwu, stated that they were adding their voices to the nationwide protest to ensure a better Nigeria and comprehensive reformation of the police.
Egwu said: “More graduates and other intellectuals should be encouraged to join the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
“Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, should be a role model to other African countries and we must always get it right. Give Nigerians a reformed police.”
Omotola and Family Joins #EndSARS Protest
One of the travellers, Osarobo, however, stated he decided to join the protesters to demands an end to police brutality and lawlessness.
Osarobo said: “Although, I may be stranded but I am not frustrated, because the reforms in the police are long overdue.
“End must come to policemen moving innocent Nigerians to ATM (Automated Teller Machine) points or the use of POS (Point of Sale) machines by policemen to force their victims to part with their hard-earned money. Policemen and women should also be well paid.”
