Arraigment Of Uzor Kalu, Stalls As EFCC Asks For Transfer Of Case

Orji Uzor Kalu In Court

The arraignment of the former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, before Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja was on Tuesday stalled.

When the matter was called for arraignment of the former governor and his co-defendants, Ude John Udeagu and Slok Nigeria Limited, counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Chile Okoroma, informed the court of the request by the commission for the matter to be transferred to Lagos Division of the court for trial.

According to Okoroma: “We wrote a letter dated January, 2021 to the Chief Judge of the court for a transfer of the case to Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.”

According to prosecution counsel, EFCC also wrote a similar letter to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court seeking the transfer of the matter to Lagos for adjudication.

He said the request was a result of the decision of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court in the previous trial involving the defendants, adding also that no element of the offence for which Kalu and his co-defendants are being charged occurred in Abuja.

Upon the submissions of the counsel, the court slated June 7, 2021 for report of the prosecution’s request for transfer of the case to Lagos.
