Nigerian-American Kelechi Ndukwe has made history following his appointment as commander of a US Navy ship, USS Halsey (DDG-97), described as an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. The US Mission in Nigeria on Thursday congratulated Mr Ndukwe, an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame and the US Naval War College. He was appointed last Thursday.

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Mohammed, and his top officers have been booted out following Monday’s attack on the state Police Command headquarters and the Nigerian Custodial Centre which led to the release of 600 suspects and 1,884 inmates from the correctional facility. Newsmen gathered on Thursday that Mohammed was removed alongside the Deputy Commissioner, Operations, Ilyasu Yahaya; and Assistant Commissioner, Operations, James Aikai, by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

Senator Rochas Okorocha (Imo West) has slammed Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma for what he described as politicisation of Monday’s attacks on Imo Police Headquarters and Correctional Centre. Uzodimma had alleged some aggrieved sponsored the attacks where over 1,800 inmates were freed with the Police Headquarters razed.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has frozen the bank accounts of 11 companies and individual. The announcement came after the CBN got an interim order from the Federal High Court, Abuja division, to freeze 11 bank accounts of 5 companies and an individual for 45 days to enable it to conduct investigations into suspicious activities.

On Thursday the National Universities Commission has granted provisional licenses to 20 newly established private universities.
