For fans of Nigerian music, today, 12th May 2021, started as a normal day, rainy and cold in many cities. Then the news of Sound Sultan’s illness hit the internet and what was just an annoyingly wet day has now gained the potential of signaling the beginning of the end of an illustrious career.

Born Olanrewaju Fasasi, in 1976, Sound Sultan the rapper began his career in the 1990s. In 2000, he released what can be said to be his most known track, “Jagbajantis”, a song that questions many constructs in the socio-political domain.

Sahara Reporters made this known just before noon in a tweet, shared below:

This online-only media didn’t name their source. The only information they divulged was that Sound Sultan was “battling with throat cancer in the United States of America”. Sahara Reporters didn’t name the city or state where the rapper was receiving treatment nor did they say when he traveled and began receiving this treatment. Sahara Reporters didn’t mention their source nor the existence of it.

Here’s the moment Sound Sultan condemned killings in Southern Kaduna

Sound Sultan isn’t just a musician as he has had stints in basketball competition management and team ownership. He has also been named UN Ambassador. More recently, he became an actor and guest-starred in countless episodes of Africa Magic comedy series “My Flatmates” co-created and starring foremost comedian Basketmouth.

The last time we saw Sound Sultan on the set of this TV show was in July 2020. This doesn’t mean he was down in any way. He is a guest actor in the show. Even as a regular cast member, he could have long hiatuses (or define his absence with a permanent departure).

According to Healthline.com, the survival rate of throat cancer is high and it’s even curable. The only exception, which is mostly fatal, is when the disease spreads beyond the neck and head region. We cannot tell how much the cancerous cells have spread but Sahara Reporters used the word “battling” to describe Sound Sultan’s ailment. If they are to be believed, this doesn’t look good for Sound Sultan.

This news item would be updated as we await a response from Sound Sultan’s media people.
