Yesterday, the 23rd of May 2021, the long-awaited boxing competition at Nnewi took place at Anaedo Hall. It was a show of raw talent, of passion, and fireworks. Among those that participated in Nnewi SummerStorm Boxing Competition were Chimaobi Agubor against Onyekwere Eneh in a match Eneh won.
Others include Osama Owoh and Nsofor Chinedu. Osama emerged victorious. Izu Okonkwo fought Sajan Mohammed from Niger Republic and Mohammed won. The fight between Isreal Okafor and Onyekwere Ifeanyi ended in Ifeanyi’s favour.
The Nnewi SummerStorm Boxing Competition wasn’t an all-men bout as there was room for female boxers to display their talent. The highlight of their section saw Odinaka Grace and Uwando Onyinyechi slug it out. It was closely matched but Grace won. Other categories include amateur boxers. The CEO of Hally Rock Boxing Promotion based in Georgia Atlanta USA, Mr. Henry Okafor, promised to turn Nnewi, the commercial hub of the Eastern States of Nigeria into a huge boxing hub.
He also promised to introduce Boxing into Igboland, because according to him, Boxing is a very big Industry which people are yet to tap into.
“I’m so hungry to start a new industry called Boxing in Igboland and the whole of Eastern Nigeria,” he said. “I came all the way from the United States of America to stage this show. I spent thousands of dollars to make this happen. I didn’t make any profit, but I’m okay. Boxing is the highest paying industry in the world.
“I want us to establish another Industry other than Film and Soccer. It is the only Industry where you can be paid over N500 Million in a night. Biafra has very strong and hard boys that can beat anybody from any part of the world. On what he is doing to get some of the Industrialists and corporate bodies.
“I’m calling on Individuals and Corporate Bodies including Clubs like Anaedo Social Club of Nigeria to come out and back us. I have spoken to the Chairman of Anaedo Club and I have informed him that the next Afiaolu and Iriji Festivals will close with a Boxing Tournament.
“Anambra State is the richest state in Nigeria and Nnewi is the richest town with the highest concentration of Billionaires. The Boxing Show is presently on Igbo Word TV and the next one will be on Anaedo Online, Primenews TV ABS, NTA, AIT, and other News Agencies.
Asked to estimate what it cost him to put up the show, he said: “It is huge, but let me just put it at over $40,000. The advertisement was huge. But people are yet to get familiar with this, but we have to ginger them and persuade them to come.”
Ifeanyi Uba FC dumped over unpaid wages
He was asked if this is his first time doing this, he replied that his brother Chinedu Okeke, the HBE Intercontinental Champion organized one in January this year and he spent a lot of money, but people like Senator Ifeanyi Ubah helped him and that both of them worked hard to bring the game to this level.
“On why he wants to make Nnewi the boxing hub of Nigeria, he answered Anambra is the first son of Igboland. And Nnewi is the number one Town in Igboland. Nnewi is the land of gold: Anaedo. So, I want to it starts from here.
Making a passionate appeal to the Stakeholders and people that matters in Anambra State, he said: “I am appealing to all the people that God has blessed in Anambra State to come forward and let us start another Industry. We already have the Film and Soccer Industries, now let us start the Boxing and wrestling Industries.”
He finally gave a shout-out to all the people that made the event a success. These coaches, Boxers that came from Niger Republic and Ghana all the people that helped in one way or the other.
