A former contender for Anambra number one citizenship and the immediate past publicity secretary of Nzuko-Ora Nnewi, Sir Augustine Ike, has weighed in on the belief or fear (depending on your political spectrum) that ex-Central Bank Governor, Charles Soludo would be the next governor of Anambra State.

Sir Ike was responding to Anayo Nwosu, an Nnewi indigene who, while not, necessarily, a supporter of the ex-CBN chief, wrote an open letter that highlighted his wariness of the deep animosity levelled at Soludo and his recent influential Nnewi supporters such as Chief Ibeto.

Anayo had summed his piece thus, “I hereby sincerely ask that our young people should please stop attacking Soludo. Let us campaign for our candidates but stop saying things injurious to Nnewi’s long-term interest. The Internet never forgets.”

Ike showed particular angst at Chief Cletus Ibeto for endorsing Soludo, saying, “Ibeto has every right to protect his business interest, but not to the detriment of those who call him FATHER.” (Emphasis Ike’s).

The former Nnewi Township executive member was pained by the fact that none of the groups advocating for an Nnewi Governor of Anambra has “issued a press release to reinstate their stand on the Nnewi Agenda project.”

Of the two principal advocates, Ike said he could make allowances for Chief Dan Ulasi, but for Engr. Ajulu Uzodike Ozi Uzo Nnewi, he would be mightily disappointed if he doesn’t release a statement to the media. As of the time of writing this, there is no statement from any pro-Nnewi candidate groups.

The meat of Augustine Ike’s article, at least where he shows the most forcefulness is on Soludo’s candidacy.

“Soludo knows he will not be Governor,” Ike wrote with the confidence of someone who has privileged information. He continues thus: “His Excellency Chief Dr. Willie Obiano knows that Soludo will not be Governor.”

It is hard to believe this latter claim as Obiano would not, ordinarily, pour so much political currency on the candidature of Soludo if he was certain that the latter would fail. The survival of APGA rests on the shoulders of Obiano and he won’t be passing the mantle to Soludo if he was sure Soludo was bound to fail.

But so many things about Anambra 2021 defy logic. If Sir Ike has insider information, only time would reveal this.

Sir Ike took a dig at Anayo and other people sympathetic to the cause of Soludo. The temptation would have been too sweet to resist. “I will end this,” he wrote, “by urging Anayo Nwosu and other supporters of Soludo to go and read Macbeth by Williams Shakespeare ”

Ike concludes thus, “Though Prof. Soludo may be ‘Thane’ of Anambra [a reference to ‘Macbeth’], he won’t be Governor.”
